How far did it go?
Mentioned in a different post about my son killing my truck. I exaggerated slightly - it still runs. Barely.
Decided to make this a poll just for fun. I want to see how far people think this poor thing went before she got, well, TOOO HOTTTT! Never done a poll before, hopefully I'll get it right.
Scenario: 18 year old with broke down Bug borrows the 1978 Ford F250 Camper Special. 130k original miles, runs, err, ran great except for needing a carb rebuild. 6.6 litre (351M 400). I got nearly 15 MPG driving from Monroe (Ellis') to Portland (14.5 on the way up) and averaged 12-13 MPG to work and back. Darn good MPG fer the beasty! Done much work to it. Recent oil and filter change. I usually dump in a synthetic blend, but went full Mobile 1 this time.
Kid takes truck. Kid gets carried away and picks up friend and friends sister from school. Stops at Taco Bell. Leaving Taco Bell power steering goes out.
Kid keeps driving
The belt that runs the steering pump also turns the water pump (broke the belt).
How far do you think he got before he could go no further?

OMG! I'm sorry Jeff...and to think I still want kids Did he make it home? or did it die before he got there? lol that really sucks...
I figure he would have probably made it about 12 miles before things would have started seizing up...my guess anyway...dang...horrible thought just thinking of that!

Thank gawd we got AAA. He's used it three times already, although once was for a friend.
When the tow truck dropped them off with the truck a possible reason for his sudden lack of intelligence became apparent. I had not seen his friends sister since she was 11. She is now 16, and a fine looking young lady. With three in the truck he certainly wasn't rubbing thighs with Zach.
Hormones... Heh.

Don't know about the fords but I had a Cadillac that just would not quit after the radiator went dry. I drove it to another oil change before realizing there was no fluid in the thing.
I am guessing 16.

I'm starting to get impressed by the guesses!
Ellis- this thing won't be going anywhere again w/o at least a tear down and rebuild. It's running on maybe 6 cylinders (5 would probably be closer). Lots of rattling and clanking - I know at least a couple lifters are gone. No water in the oil, but then there may not have been any left to get in there. No matter what, it's got to be coked with oil.
For guessers - city and highway driving was involved, about 50/50

twenty miles! I was surprised to see folks pick 24! I never in a milllion would have guessed it would make it 10, let alone 20. For the local people - he drove from 122nd and Glisan (Taco Bell) out passed Boring via Foster and 212/224. He finally stopped when the lower radiator hose blew (fist sized hole) and finally noticed the steam. Crazy. After he turned it off it wouldn't turn over again. I wonder why???

It is amazing how much abuse today's engines can take. One of my co-workers kids a couple of years back was headed up to Snoqualmie Pass to go Skiing in their S-10 blazer, and for whatever reason left the car in D1 the whole time. Any guesses how far up I-90 she made it from Bellevue before the motor blew?

DOH!
We laugh and/or groan over this type of thing, but I have to say I have learned that people who are tone deaf may not be aware of rpm's and noises the way most of us are. I've known two people that cannot tell variations in rpm very well at all. Where we grimace and shut it down, they cannot tell there is a problem and just keep plugging away.
Then again, I was just told a story this morning about a person that borrowed a car and was preparing to drive halfway across Texas even though it was leaking tranny fluyid so fast the owner was buying cases of it to keep up. Needless to say, the owner had authorized only a short trip if absolutely necessary. The borrower had no concept about whay was going on there....
