My reason for sayin what I did was b/c they actually sell covers like this with crazy designs cut out for imports that come painted to match. So as soon as I looked at them it was a instant turn off.
I'd say if your set on custom tail lights there are better alternatives. If you have the time, patience & know-how to make a custom LED set that could be something. You could keep the stock housing & color but use LED's to make the lights appear round similar to the Vette. Maybe with a little tinting over them so the LED's would be a more pronounced circle instead of spreading the light across the lense. Or even mask off circles the size you want on the inside of the lense while its apart for the LED board install & paint them black. Then the outside would appear stock but only the unpainted circles would allow light to shine thru.
Maybe even mask off a design on the tail light housing & tint the areas unmasked so its a very subtle design overlay that would still allow light thru but when looked at closely would be totally custom. That could be eye catching without the ricey appearance of those covers.

look like a supra. there is a guy in tampa who put supra tail lights on his t/a, look just like that with no honey comb. the honeycomb behind throws it off, id vht the holes black to blend better. i like the silver center section, but getting rid of that black tail line doesnt allow the ceta to blend with the car as much... plus the night time lights are to one side of the hole, should line up i think to view better.

I think a dremel and some creativity, of course taking into consideration of the reflectors and the exact placement of the bulbs; a decent design could be had other than crop circles.
If it weren't for the now noticeable gaps, paint straight across would probably look kind of nice.
