Default Best SD tuner to go with for mail order?

I'm converting my LS1 over to EFI now, Victor JR intake, 42lb green top injectors, edelbrock 4150 throttle body etc and i am curious what luck people have been having will mail order tunes for speed density. I have always used PCMforless and they are great IMO but i know Speed density tuning is alot tricker. I was quoted $650 for a speed density dyno tune, does that sound about right? I was thinking about just getting a mail order tune to get it running and then buying EFI live or HPtuners or something and tinkering with it myself. For $650 i could buy either of those new.

Geoff at Engine Power Systems is a master EFI tuner and can do a kickass mail order tune.

shawn doing a mail order SD tune is completly stupid IMO. SD is not easy to tune and when its not perfect its not easy to keep sending the computer back and paying for dyno time to get it right. I can do a flash for you but i cant say it will be perfect.

buy a WBO2 and tuner. Although it's expensive at first, you'll not regret it as it will give you the power to tweak the tune as much as you want or need. With mail order, you'll be stuck with what you get and it won't be right. Even if you can send it back for free tweaking, you'll never dial it in like you will with your own tuner.

Personally, I've had a lot of success with EFILive and their SD tutorial. Other than their original recommendation to increase the fuel table 300% for safety (lol), it's been great.

I would not do a mail order SD tune, no possible way to get it right and I've done PLENTY.

Well honestly i was thinking of going with PCMforless for my mail order, just well enough to get it to run and then go ahead and buy HPtuners or something and learn to tune it myself. I already have a Dual Wideband O2 setup that will Log AFR for me. It also has analog outputs and such too.

Can someone explain to me what the credits and such mean? I see some used ones going for $200 or so and needing credits and and others here and there. What are the credits for? Is is like 2 credits for 1 vin or 2 credits for 2 uploads of tunes, or 2 credits for 2 hours of tuning?

I have a laptop and all to tune with as well as the car is tagged and very road worthy (well its apart right now) and i live on endless almost uninhabited backroads for tuning so i dont mind doing the work myself I'm just looking to get a good starting tune then since i have been reading about the difficulty of mail order SD tunes. I may go with EFI live as ive read very good things about them even in the Duramax forums.

also, i cant speak for efi live as far as credits, but HPT uses 2 credits per vin, and once that vin is registered, you can do whatever/however much tuning you want to forever. Im not sure on EFI live, as I have only used HPT

Well im reading that HP tuners uses a credit to tune the engine and a credit to tune the transmission but i have a 6 speed, i should need to tune it right?

Also with HPtuners or EFIlive will i be able to remove VATS, AIR, EGR, and program it for my Painless harness?

EFILive you pay 99 for each VIN so it's about the same as HPT.

If you're car is gonna make any power at all, tuning on the street becomes a nightmare at best. I tried to dial mine in and got very close but it took several 150+ MPH runs on a remote highway to do it. NOT RECOMMENDED!

My vote is for EFILive but I'm biased. I love the V2 interface and the free custom OS's. HPT requires a credit for theirs, IIRC. In the end both will do the job. I don't think there is a distinct advantage other than EFILive's free custom OS's and V2 hardware.

What are the custom OS's? And whats the V2 offer? I've just really started reading into it as i just ordered all my parts and am trying to figure out the tuning issues before they get here.

I can take it to a dyno and tune it myself when i get it close and comfortable with tuning it. I dont know that i trust my 68 chasis to 150mph on all drums haha. Ive had it that fast but had plenty of room to just use engine braking.

Well ive been reading and reading and decided on HPtuners. They have the advanced 1bar map speed density only tune option which i think is really going to help me. My only question is should i get the pro version so i can hook up my Widebands analog output? Is it worth the extra $150? Bryan Herter from PCMforless is going to send me a tune for $100 that i will be able to upload to my car and it will serve as a baseline for me.

LOL! The biggest thing that worried me was having a deer jumping out in front of me. Other than than, with 3 miles to stop, no biggie.

V2 is a standalone logger with tuning options coming soon. It promises to be able to flash the PCM without a computer. The full release software is still in beta as of today. Logging works well.

The Custom OS adds resolution for boost and optimizes the computer for SD turning. I'm running a 2bar MAP with Incon TT so it comes in handy. with very little experience, I was able to take their VE and COS tutorials and convert my tune to SD.

One big selling point for me was that you can download their software and have a look before buying. HPT doesn't do that and in my experience as a computer technician, software companies who don't allow demoing their software have something to hide... there sure are a lot of HPT fans out there so it can't be all bad.

Check out EFILive's documentation HERE

Download a copy to eval from their home page

Which version of EFIlive would you recommend? IS the 799.99 version the same as the 649.00 version of HP Tuners?

799 gets you V2, two licenses and free software upgrades and custom os's. no extra charge to run the boost os.

More or less the same but that extra $150 gives you a far more powerful handheld device.

FYI Standalone Black Box Flashing (Download and Upload Tunes without a Laptop) is NOW AVAILABLE to the masses.
