Default How much timing is too much(without knock)

I am tuning my SBE LS1 and the timing is confusing me a bit. The more timing I add the better it gets but at what point is too much?

My old setup had about 7.9:1 DCR and a .043" quench. Now I'm at about 8.95:1 and .033" quench. Both are on 92-93 gas.

WOT isn't causing me issues, it's all the cruising around. I was getting the occasional popping in the exhaust so I added some timing(upwards of 6-8* in some places. Some of it is fixed but I'm just wondering if I can/should keep adding timing.

I also get some hesitation but again never WOT.

Mamo 220's
225/227 114+4
LS3 injectors
LS2 intake(yes I know)
Holley 90mm TB
SD Custom HPTuners OS
TR6 V Power plugs .045"gap

I've included my tune as of today and a short log.

Thanks for looking.

WOT is easy to tune. It is everything under that that takes time and patience. Eah combo and car likes something a little different. I can't see your hpt files here at work, but I have dialed in quite a bit of timing in some of my tunes. At low load, light throttle, you may see over 40* or even 50* or timing. At higher engine loads, possibly in the single digits. Log it, tweak it, and see what she likes.

I wasn't sure if it was normal to see so much timing in the low RPM areas. Everyone always talks about WOT timing numbers which like you mentioned was the easy part. I know the very low throttle (0-30kPa) area sees high numbers but I always attributed that to decel minimal fueling.

Thanks for the heads up.

Timing looks fine to me. The MMS heads like timing IIRC. Moreso than the stock casting stuff.

The timing map looks pretty good to me.

I don't go by rules of thumb. I just take the car out with real-time tuning enabled and make changes in real time. See what the car likes.

agreed timing looks good, could probably use more depending on your altitude, especially with a scr that low.

Those were my old and new DCR. Current SCR is about 11.56:1. I'll add more timing in the under 3k areas. Altitude is at or below sea level haha. Love that Dutch weather!

timing is just right or maybe a tad high if you have SCR 11.56:1 and a DCR of 8.95:1. I would put fresh plugs, do a pull with a good load on the engine, and pull the plugs to see if your heat is good.

That's the best way to test timing... do a WOT run 1-2-3-4 and see what happens as the chamber gets hot. If you have LS1 KS installed, they will show KR... but then pull the plugs and check them after the run. If you have a Gen IV with a Gen III computer... good luck getting any data.

I've done a number of pulls and the plugs all had that orange light coating on them and that was it! It's all gen III stuff.

Just thought I would make an update. Due to the complete lack of knock everywhere and the fact that my plugs were reading a little cold. A lot of orange coloring. I took out the TR6 v-powers and put in some TR5GP's that I had laying around. ALL of my misfire are gone. I still do not have any knock but my fuel trims are now saying I'm running rich everywhere.

Just a note for anyone reading. If you are getting a misfire at low RPM but WOT is good your plugs may be too cold!!!

Apparently a really tight quench, cool weather and good fuel needs warmer plugs. All testing is done with the car fully warmed up btw. IAT's are about 12*C and coolant at about 97*C(stock thermostat)

Unfortunately I cannot do any 1-2-3-4 testing.......rain and 180 TW tires means 1spin-2spin-3spin-4spin-crash lol I'm guessing it will be raining here until about April.

Maybe in Aug 2017 haha I also have Spa, the Ring and Brands Hatch all within 3-4 hours of me. So it's not all bad. Just wet.
