Default Those getting mega squirt

i know there are a bunch of us planning on getting megasquirt
thought we'd put our heads together and help each other out

ill start off with what we need to buy

We'll need the basic megasquirt kit, talking with desielgeek he said that MS1 is better then megasquirt right now, so just stick with the basic one.

You'll need a few extra GM sensors (IAT and CLT). About $25 apiece.

youll need to make your own harness, though there are harness kits out there.

if you plan on running low Z injectors then youll need a flyback board. this will have to be sodered to the megasquirt board.

im still curious on the relay board and the purpose for it, but ive heard its not really needed.

not sure if we can post links for the best/cheapest place to pick these up from so we'll have to find out
but mega squirt forums has a section on places that supply it.

so everybody chime in on what they know.

I'm looking at it too. Let me know what you find out. I think you've researched more than me. Pm me or email me at srunlay@comcast.net bout what you've found.

heres a really good site I found that does a pretty good job of explaining all the features and how it works

http://www.rs-autosport.com/

has all the sensors, harnesses, different boards, and they will set it up.

are you guys planning on piggybacking it? or going to have it standalone to run timing as well?
thanks

Busta9876 has it running full timing control, EDIS etc.

I wouldn't call Parish's configuration "piggyback" - it's not like an S-AFC, or any device that fools the stock computer - he just runs the fuel injector circuits with megasquirt, and the ignition circuitry with his GM ECU.

Yeah I guess you couldn't call it that.

probably how im going to do it, unless somebody figures out a way to fire the GM coils.
unless a problem accurs with spark at a high HP level.
but there always a distributor option.

There's development going on right now to fire coil-on-plug and coil-near-plug systems, but it was also posted to "not expect it this year."

We built the wiring harness for ZAngel's car last night, and the new IAT and ECT sensors are on order. Now its more or less up to mounting the unit in the passenger compartment, mounting the relay board under the hood, and wiring it up.

dont suppose you want to keep making those wiring harnesses for the setup do you?

69firebird: did you buy that guy with the 6.0's megasquirt?

Brains: at least post a list of what the wiring harness consisted of

You don't "need" the relay board, but it makes it a little faster/easier to hook things up with the screw terminals I guess. The big thing I liked was being able to mount the MS inside the car, and have all the connections for under-hood things, under the hood.

I'll post pics of the harness when I've got it all wrapped and loomed pretty The harness was actually cannibalized from an old LT1 harness I had laying around. I wouldn't mind making another harness at some point, and then handing it off to Speartech to duplicate. So far this harness has the 8 injector clips, the IAT, ECT, and some wire to splice into the PCM for tach and TPS. It'd be cool to find matching female inline connectors for the TPS, allowing you to simply plug it inline instead of splicing. The tach you'd still have to splice, of course.

if any of you guys want my assembled MS.. i have it just sitting here. just make a offer.

i built it right before i swapped to LS1... i was going to run injection on my 400 SBC, but i ended up selling all my SBC stuff and getting the LS1.. now the MS is just sitting on the shelf...
i havent run it on any car, but i built the stimulator and it works fine....

Why not use this:

http://www.msdignition.com/2005/2005_3.htm

to run a fully programmable, boost referenced ignition system?

Because it doesn't control the fuel, the ms controls fuel and timing and many others.

what he posted only controls the timing.

what megasquirt was ORIGNALLY designed to do was control fuel... not fuel AND timing.. athough there are hacks to do so.

what he was suggesting is running the aftermarket MSD computer to control timing, and using the megasquirt to control fuel... eliminating the factory PCM from controlling timing like most LS1 MS users currently do.

my answer would be this:
the factory PCM is already wired in and you have the hardware.. it controls more then timing, it also does the gauges, and some other chassis specific things, like fuel system, VATS check on the spark, ect.... in a OEM LS1 car, id leave the stocker.
besides, HPtuners is cheaper then buying that setup.

in a swap setup, such as my LS1 in a 3rdgen swap, if i was going to run MS, that might be a good choice.
