'98 to '02 VCM swap.

'98 to '02 VCM swap.
I asked this at HPTuners website but I don't think they understand what I'm doing.
I have a '98 LS1 drivetrain and VCM/wiring.
I don't like what I've read about the '98 stuff, plus I have a '02 car with the '02 HPT program.
I want to swap this engine into something else so wouldn't it be easier to get a '02 VCM with it's wiring to use in a swap?
I think those at HPTuners website thought I was thinking of changing the wiring in an existing, running car.
It's either this or Edelbrocks LS1 carb intake and ignition computer.
I have a carb, I'd buy the edelbrock kit plus one of their cams for probably around $1000. Wouldn't a wiring harness and VCM cost less than this?

If you're up for soldering 50-100 wires (or, maybe
get the little pin-removal tool and just swap loc'ns)
I'd straight swap the PCM (you can use a truck one
too, if you reflash it to FBody code, same hardware).
Lot of fussy work, but....
On the old-school side, why not go that last bit and
get the front cover kit that lets you run an HEI dist
(and a low pressure mechanical fuel pump)? Then it's
flyweights and timing light, badda-bing. I bet this is
no worse than the ignition computer price and pretty
much set it, forget it. In a non-FBody transplant this
is the way I'd go. 100 wires, or one wire. Hmm....

Hey!
Where did you see that kit? I've never heard of it.
The only reason I want the stock VCM is so it can shift the trans (and I can use that shift kit and converter ).
And I want an '02 so I can tune it.
I am seriously considering getting a six speed though because I will probably put it in my 2000 S10, it's already a 5 speed so the pedals are there at least.
BUT thats going to add $1700 or so to the price. And thats a price I got yesterday for an LT1 T56 in a '97 SS that looks like it got hit by a train. Suprising the trans isn't broken.

Saw this in Chevy High Performance, Aug '05 issue.

I can't quite make out the part number on the casting
photo and the GM Performance Parts site doesn't turn
up anything by keyword, but maybe Scoggin-Dickey
could figure it out for you. It might be a bit of a parts
chasing exercise.

Jimmy I thought about that HEI swap into an LS1 since you posted it, I liked the idea at first but then I thought man I hate HEI's in fact I cleaned out the garage two weeks ago and got rid of a box of HEI's and parts.
I like the Edelbrock kit but they only made about 419 hp with it.
Seems easy. The HEI set up looks expensive.
I'm going to trade 2xLS1 (you got a PM) for the PCM just incase, it would be nice to have tuning capabilites.
I'll also give Jes a call.
I read somewhere that certian S10 PCMs will run the LS1 after reprogramming, V6 ones I think. I really have no idea at this point, still gathering information and learning.
I need to pop the hood on the ole S10 and see what the pcm looks like, maybe check the oil while I'm under there.

Maybe a dumb question, I don't know.

Just to verify, are the sensors and accesories the same from the 98 and 99+ motors? I've got a 98 motor and T56, but I'll be running a 99 PCM and wiring harness when it goes in my 93 RX7. I was wondering if anyone knows of any pitfalls that I might come across? I'll also be buying a copy of HPTuners and will probably flash to a 02 bin file to make SD tuning a bit easier. Thanks in advance.

You can tune 98 vehicles with everyones software, Efilive gives unlimited free 98 support with all thier programming cables, The reason why they would want to upgrade to a newer pcm, would be to take advantage of the custom operatings they they have so you can control boost or use two timing tables. It isnt really that big of a deal unless you have something really crazy to set up. Not that big of a deal really, there are always work arounds...
