Default Year of PC change on F-Bodies

I hear of 98 computers not as tune friendly resulting in less rwhp/tq numbers is this true?
Does the 2000 model year have the better pcm?
What year did they change?

thanks , cws T/A

98 is different then 99-02 are all the same

at WOT they make the same power, any differences are not related to the pcm.

98-99-2000 are all basically the same, i think 98s have bigger injectors, slighty dif cam also. 01-02s have the ls6 intake, some have ls6 blocks.

according to hptuners compare there are ~67 different tables from the 98 to 99 computer including everything from VE, PE, IFR, IDLE, spark advance, TM...pretty much everything is at least slightly different. From 99 to 00 there were 37 differences including VE, Idle, spark advance. From 00 to 01 there were 97 differences and from 01 to 02 only 6 differences. So yes there are changes from year to year.

I believe that you would have to switch the harness and the gage cluster. Major undertaking which involves taking the dash apart.

There is no performance difference to speak off so it would seem to be pointless. It would be easier and cheaper to switch to a custom OS from someone like HPTuners or EFIlive.

1998-1999 67 Changes
1999-2000 37 Changes
2000-2001 97 Changes
2001-2002 06 Changes

207 Changes From 1998 to 2002

Is this Gm upgrading the Pc or Hp tuners upgrading their software?

There are 160 pins that go into two main connectors, blue and red on the pcm. Out of the 160 pins btw 98 and 99+up, 8 are the same, of which 5 of the 8 are not used. So only 3 pins would not have to be altered: PCM pos volt pin 19 on the blue connector, BAT Pos volt pin 20 on the blue connector and the Serial Data input on the red connector pin 58. You will need a pcm plastic holder as they are different sized btw the years. A pin extractor as the pins have a locking device and lots of patience.

Not sure on the gage cluster. I do know that on the 98 gage clusters the oil press, coolant temp, get their inputs directly from the sensors as opposed to the data bus on newer cars.

Don't know if the fuel tank will be needed to be swapped for the gage cluster to read right like others who have done v-6 or lt-1 to ls1 swaps. Maybe Magnus or etc. could chime in on that.

There is no performance difference to speak off so it would seem to be pointless. It would be easier and cheaper to switch to a custom OS from someone like HPTuners or EFIlive.
With deference to those who have really kick *** 98s on this board who have come up with innovative ways around the limits of the 98 operating system, I would have to disagree with you when you say there is no performance difference to speak of... The newer operating systems are more dynamic, have more features and more promise for the future. There are just not as many 98s out their as all the other model years combined so developers of stuff have to take that into consideration when spending precious r&d time. There will always be die hard 98 guys out there and I don't want to start a war with them, I just find it odd that when you do a search on this subject on this board you can find really little other than hearsay on this subject. It's as if those who have successfully done a 98 to 99+up project that is fully functional are being tight lipped about it. Why? I don't know. I have read about a few people who have Race cars that are modded but are not streetable-no gages. Odder still is the fact that many people have no problem tearing apart their motors for H/C stuff but run away screaming when you mention upgrading the electronics/ software.

It would be easier and cheaper to switch to a custom OS from someone like HPTuners or EFIlive.
I don't know about Tuners but you cannot run a custom OS in EFI Live with a 98 pcm / OS. The point being that Live and Tuners and whoever else gets into the LSx tuning world has to spend their R&D time and money wisely and for the largest potential audiences/customer bases. EFI Live has partnered with Moates Engineering with their Moates controller. Real Time tuning who else offers that? I would say that these and other future enhancements to both companies software would / should weigh in on any 98 owner who is not interested in what the current market has availible to offer them. Why should this mod be so taboo when people regularly do a whole lot more to their cars- one big reason is the lack of info on it. I have worked out the pin swap on excel and I am willing to share my efforts so far if somebody would host it. I used a 98 Helm manual and the stickies section for the 99up+ part. Maybe others will open up about this.

Thats great Doc do share the swap As far as dash removal Ive done it on other cars so that would nt be a problem , once you get the small peices out of the way , gas tank swap couldnt the sending unit be changed or rewired if not a whole tank swap to a newer model should work . keep the info coming
