p0103 - 2nd gear issues on 98 LS1
Hey guys, I have just a full bolton 98 LS1 car.
I've been having an issue the last couple of days.
I was WOT on the streets in 1st gear.... shift to 2nd gear hard and it throws the code. I'm not really sure whats going on here. I scanned the car and it threw the p0103 code (high frequency voltage - MAF).
Ok. After scanning the car, I cleared the code. Everything seemed to go back to normal... even during numerous WOT runs. Untill today, the same thing happened. WOT into 2nd gear and it seemed as if the car hit rev-limiter at around 4500rpm or so.
The car just fell on its face and threw black smoke out the back.
I tried searching and I found similar incidents. Possibly a problem with 98 cars?
What I'm wanting to know is how to fix it. Could it be a bad MAF sensor. It puzzles me because everything was fine till the last time I drove it.
Remember... the car is just boltons so I'm sure I'm not maxing out the MAF. I have not added any more fueling at all. I did have it tuned last year and everything was dandy until now.
Anyone have any advice or possible solutions?

I should also mention, the car DID NOT throw the code last time it acted up.
It just fell out at 4500 in second gear and acted like it hit the rev limiter.
I'm sure it pertains to the same MAF issue though.

could be a bad MAF or maybe a dirty MAF. Get some electronics cleaner from autozone and spray the inside of the MAF out with it. Be careful not to break the little wires that hold the sensors in the MAF though. If that doesnt fix it then it very well could be a bad MAF.

If you are maxing out the maf and throwing that code, The pcm will do a safety mode on the trans which will allow it to do FULL MAX line pressure. It does this by commanding the lowest allowed Force motor current as specified on that table.
It does this to protect the trans due to the maf helping with applied torque calculations.

I'm hoping its a bad MAF! I hate having issues without knowing what the problem is.

I cleaned it a few minutes ago and took it for a drive.
Went WOT around 4 times. First three times I went from 1st to 4th with no issues, drove perfect!
The last WOT run was 2nd gear at 40mph. Wound 2nd out... shifted third and shortly before redline it shutdown hard and backfired really bad.

UPDATE:
Problem solved.
Apparently the MAF sensor went bad all of a sudden. Swapped MAF sensors with a buddy and went WOT 6-7 times and everything ran the way it was suppose to!

Jared, you may also want to check which cal your PCM is using. 98's had a PCM software update that was through the dealerships. One of the updates fixed the p0103 issue with the 98's.
Go here and type in your Vin and it should tell you which cal it currently has and if there are any updates for it. http://tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web If I remember correctly, there were 3 cal's for the 98's and the 2nd cal was the one that prevented the false p0103 code from happening.
