Default Scanner setup help?

I have an elmscan 5 scanner for my 99 ws6. It's an OBD II scanner.

I plugged it in under the dash, and then into the laptop. Switched the ignition to on (didn't turn the car on). Opened up scantool.net and the red LED switched to green on the scanner.

My serial port is com 1, and I tried all the baud rates in the scan tool. Keeps saying "ECU timeout...then it says Protocol not found".

Do you have any options to select the protocol the scanner will use to talk to the PCM?

OBD2 and free are never used in the same sentence.

Are you looking for something to just read DTC trouble codes or to datalog running paramaters with data?

Just google OBD2 Code Reader and take your pick. Most auto parts stores will read them for free too.

You can go to autozone and they will read the codes for free.
If you want to invest in a scan tool, EFILive is the best you can get and they have upgrade paths into the tuning suite.
