Re: Why buy it?
The shop will charge you $400+ to use it
You can tune for yourself if you own it
You don't have to wait for the shop to get you in
You can do alot fo things with it other than tune like remove EGR and AIR functionality
Just to name a few things
If your not the type of person who really likes to do things for yourself you might just want to have the shop do it. They have more experience and the associated equipment to do a good job first time. Programs like this usually have a fairly steep learning curve and alot fo trial and error is neccessary.
Look around on the internet and read about it and what people do with it.

T-maxx
With East Side Performance near by, I'd call up Ken and talk with him. East Side has a special on tuning right now. East Side can even do dyno tuning and they have a good rep.
http://www.eastsideperformanceanddyn...1benchtop.html
Upgrade Tune.......$250.00
Automatic Shift Points
Torque Management Removal
Camshaft Driveability Tuning
Rev Limiter Changes
Injector Size Tuning
Misfire Detection Removal
Knock Retard Removal
Fuel Trim Locking
Full Tune. . . . . . . $400.00
Timing Table Tuning
Performance Fueling
Additional Tunes....$60.00
Any additional items wished to be done after the customer has already purchased a tune from East Side, will be done at a reduced fee of $60.00. This does not include additional tuning to Timing Table or Performance Fueling. Set up changes requiring adjustment of the Timing Table or Performance Fueling will done done at a fee of $120.00.
You can choose to send us your computer and we'll tune it for the prices listed above.
You can also choose to bring you car into our shop and have it tuned on the dyno for an additional fee.
I've talked with Ken at East Side and went with their tuning for my new project - swaping a Gen III engine into an 91 RS.
I went with mail order tuning for my 99 T/A. If you decide to go with mail order tuning, MTI did an excellent job on my tuning for $500, I think their prices vary depending on what you have done. With their cam special it's like ~$350 or so. Even if LS1 edit is ~$550 for unlimited use, by the time you get Autotap ~$250 and a used laptop if you don't have one, for say $~250, you can be in for ~$1000 to ~$1100 and you still have to learn how to tune it.

Re: Why buy it?
I hope not. When I had mine tuned it was only the one time $500. I would be willing to bet that if there was another charge after the $500 to get it redone that it would be much less. More like $100.
