4spd Huh
Since it has the 7" Snowflake wheels that means it doesn't have WS6 and therefore cannot be a W72 400 4spd so if it actually is a 4spd its going to be a 301. And yes they did put 301 in `79 T/A's I don't remember off the top of my head but it's something stupid like 1400 cars were equipped that way.

Or it's not all original, as it kinda seems that way. I'd go check it out, find out all the basics and fill us in.

I thought the late production runs 1978 differentiated between WS6 and W72. I know that one could obtain an non-W72 Ws6. I had one of those (california ws6). The Standard Catalogue of Firebirds mentioned something to the effect off seperating the two codes in late 78. I will read through it for definative answer.

According to The Standard Catalogue of Firebird, "Later in that model year, the W72 engine package could be ordered in Trans Ams without the Ws6 package for $75 extra." This is referring to 1978 Trans Ams. For 79 it states "...the higher performance T/A 6.6-liter four-barrel v-8 as a $90 option."

There is no mention of a distinction between or a pairing of the Ws6 and a L78 (option code for the T/A 6.6). All T/A 6.6s had the 4-speed. If the car is all original, it is a T/A 6.6. If not, then it is cloned and chances are it was not a Trans Am, since the only engine that had both trannys was the 301.

As far as what you are getting into, it depends on what you want to do with it. Chances are it has alot of rust, bondo over body dammage, other problems other than a head gasket, smog parts need to be replaced, interior needs to be redone, and other. If it is a project car you are willing to dump $30 thousand into, then its perfect. If its something you want to turn into a daily driver, then look for something that runs in the $14-$20 thousand range.

Considering the level of grammar, or lack thereof, in the ad, I personally would be concerned with the description of the car. My grammar is far from perfect, but I try to make it seem somewhat intelligible whenever I sell online. That person makes it seem like they barely speak english or are too lazy. If lazy is the case, then they would be too lazy to appropriately list dammage to the car. Nevertheless, if they live close to you, then take a look at the car; afterall, a look can't hurt.

To my Knowledge All`79 W72 cars were WS6 Equiped. And I have NEVER seen an Original `79 W72 car without the WS6 PKG, and that includes several Formula's. Doesn't mean it wasn't available that way I just Never seen one. This would definetly be one of those odd cars that you think no one would order, Hell the Ram Air IV was available in the `70 Formula 400 also but No One ordered it. Anyway a non WS6 equiped W72 would be a rare beast.
