Default key help?

SO long story short my key got ran over yesterday. Its pretty mangled but I was able to unlock the doors. When I tried starting the car the engine fired then died and the alarm started going off. Every time I try to start it the alarm goes off. I have a second key but the fob is dead and the same thing happens. I disconnected the battery for 10 minutes and tried again and got the same result. Any advice?? Right now it is stuck in the middle of a parking lot and I really dont want it sitting there for long.

Is there any way you can measure the resistance of your key? Get that, then goto Radio shack and get the right resistor/ resistors and cut the white wires that run up to the steering column and solder/ tape them in....this should fake out the security system

correct me if I'm wrong..... but the battery in the fob has nothing to do with starting the car. The battery is only there to work the remote buttons. If your other fob is intact, it should operate the ignition just fine.

The key has a chip in it. The only answer is to get a new fob (brand new, never programmed), attach it to the old key and program it to the car.

Programming Transmitters Without Tech 2

Turn the ignition to ON, then wait 10 minutes for the next step in the programming sequence.
After the 10 minutes has elapsed, the car horn will chirp once. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position within 5 minutes after the horn has sounded, then to the ON position within 5 seconds after switching it OFF.
Leave the key to the ON position for 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes has elapsed, the car horn will chirp twice. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position within 5 minutes after the horn has sounded, then to the ON position within 5 seconds after switching it OFF.
Leave the key to the ON position for 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes has elapsed, the car horn will chirp 3 times.
Verify that the security indicator in the instrument cluster has stopped flashing and attempt to start the vehicle.
Turn the ignition to OFF and remove the key from the ignition switch.
Move approximately 3 meters (10 ft) away from the vehicle and test the transmitter functions to validate that the transmitter has been programmed successfully.

Sounded to me like he was having a key problem, not a don problem (even though the don was messed up) . But I'm going to have to save your post svede and use the info later when I get another key fob

He's got a fob problem. The key worked in the mechanism to start the engine but the fob didn't sync up with the car's computer hence the dying and alarm.

Quick thread jack. I broke one of my keys, the fob is good....can I just get a key, take my fob apart and put it on the new key without reprogramming it?

Got my new key fob yesterday morning and did the program myself. The fob was $62 from the chevy dealer which was cheaper than I expected. The 10+10+10 program worked but the alarm was going off every time I opened the door to do the next step. Anyway the GTO is alive again!! Thanks for your help guys.

So the only way to stop the alarm from going off is to get a new Rob and program it? There is no way to just disconnect the alarm?
