It is odd to see such a post.
This was discussed, with pictures, years ago in that other GTO forum.
A solid axle will not fit for oh so many reasons. A better differential would be quite attractive, though.

We came up with this 9 inch rear back at the old EPP shop around 2008, then Tim Irwin at Moser refined it. It works very well and is stout. Thanks. Bob

Our current diff works quite well and easily takes a decent beating. I've got diffs I built taking 800 rwhp for some time now and they have no issues. The problem is no one knows how to build them right or has the proper parts for them. Unless you are a m6 car with slicks, making 750+, and racing every weekend with a dedicated race car, I don't understand the concept of a solid axle.

The Moser M9 fabricated rear is under many street driven cars, it by no means makes a car a dedicated race car. It is lighter and can handle 1000+ rwhp and won't break on you. Bob

Still can't beat IRS for a street car, this is a step backwards in most applications. You won't see a true refined street car with a solid diff these days. Then again, how many are making 1000hp? The GTO diff is only about 85lbs. Taking the back half as a whole, there could be some weight saved, but how much are we talking about?

I've got a diff in a 1000hp car, when that fails, we'll get a better idea of how much a 9" straight axle should be considered.

I took a peek at your webpage, the pics are attractive on it.

I don't understand this. Numerous individuals have swapped to a solid axle 9" in their home garages.

Why do this to a GTO? Solid axles on street cars blow. Only if you want a track dedicated car.

I recall seeing pictures of sheet metal fabrication [on that other GTO site] that is necessary to get a fit.

If an easy, backyard installation, then please show us.

I'm think of doing this to my car and I would not be a decayed drag its going to a street and strip car I just think the independent rear end there is going to be some breakage along the way unless some can built a good independent and hold up pass after pass of abuse .

It's not a bolt-in ordeal, but plenty of people have done it on jackstands in their garage.
Trakday, for one, did it on LS1GTO way back when.
