Putting back stock mufflers

Putting back stock mufflers
This probably sounds crazy but I've been thinking about finding and putting on a pair of 05/06 stock mufflers on my 04 gto to tone it down. It's pretty loud and I guess I'm ready for a change.
My current set up h/c/I with kooks LTs straight back to the mufflers for true dual exhaust. Can't recall the muffler brand. They sound nice but just too loud.
Anyhow, I've heard some clips with this set up and thought it sounded nice but I'm also open to suggestions for aftermarket mufflers if they lean towards the quieter side.
Thanks

Nice. I'm up in Talleyville.
I wouldn't recommend stock 05/06 mufflers. There are other mufflers you can install in the stock 04 location that will tone down the volume and still sound good.

However I would also point out that is a 122 cubic inch engine

Here it is with an open downpipe (almost the exact same).
With the cut-out shut, you cannot hear anything. The OEM exhaust is all quiet again like stock. The only hints are the shaking car due to the lope, and if you listen at the back you can hear that something is not quite right!

I've listened to sound clips on YouTube of others with similar setups with stock exhaust and thought it was a little too quiet but I don't have stock exhaust. So my thought was that putting on a set of stock mufflers would tone it down but I would still have decent sound from the cam and headers.

Magnaflow makes 4x9x18 oval mufflers that should fit in the 04 location. I think you would need an offset inlet/center outlet.
Hell, you could bring the car my way, and I'll jack it up and see what you currently have and if something could even be added further upstream.

I'll have to craw underneath and check it out. But remember, I don't have mufflers in the stock location. It looks more like the 05/06 set up. One pipe on each side from the headers and straight back and ending in a muffler and tip. No Y or H pipe. I'll get a pic while I'm under there.

Those are in an odd spot.
This is the 2004 location:
Either way, what you can do is retain those mufflers and install some Magnaflow 4" round mufflers in front of them, or right behind them in the 05/06 location. You can also do the 4x9x18 oval Magnaflows in the 04 location and eliminate those mufflers all together.

Unless there are serious power mods the stock '04 mufflers (they are dissimilar mufflers) have the best sound. GM spent more time on that than about anything bringing it over. They even exported an old goat to Oz to analyze the classic muscle car sound.
