Default Race Numbers

So guys, I'm contemplating the purchase of magnetic or reusable adhesive numbers for my car. In the past (and evidenced by the pic in my footer), I've had track day numbers remove paint when I waited too long after the event to remove them--5 or 6 days, baking in the sun, then chilled at night. With the spiffy new paint job, I'm loath to risk messing it up like that again.

The prevailing options appear to be magnetic .030 thick numbers or "peel and stick" reusable or permanent numbers. One question I haven't seen answered well after a LOT of forum trawling is how well magnetic numbers or ovals with numbers on them stick to the car at speeds over 100 MPH.

Anyone care to weigh in on the subject? I'm not against getting permanent numbers, though my insurance agent may have an issue with that on the street

Fought with this for a while also. It surprises me there isn't more information out there on this, however I struck out with a search as well.

I ended up going with a one-piece magnetic sheet. I tape the leading edge and it's held up just fine at 155+ mph. Don't have access to many of my pictures on this PC, however you can get a good idea of what I'm using from this pic:

No surprise -- it's nice to be able to install/remove these quickly and still have the peace of mind that the paint isn't coming off with it.

I've still yet to experiment at track speeds without tape on the edge, however it's held up to 80 mph or so on the street. I ordered an extra sheet just in case it goes flying if/when I decide to try one on track without tape.

Does anyone know exactly what type of vinyl is used for the peel and stick "reusable" graphics? I don't like many of the designs and color options online so I was going to have a local graphics shop make some for me.

I used the static cling letters for a long time (my WS6 doors are fiberglass) I used a clear vinyl that I put my letters on. if you apply it with water and then work all the water out so there's no bubbles it sticks pretty darn good. Only trouble I had was at one event in the rain where the water helped to start pealing off the graphics. Not only did I have my numbers set up this way, but other stickers and graphics as well. Take them off as soon as you are done at the track or you could have some problems. When off, I stored them on a clean flat surface, like my windshield. Don't make it up like the "85" in the picture, that was a pain in the A$$

A friend of mine owns a small vinyl cutter and does side jobs for people. I had him cut some standard vinyl stickers then I'll need to buy some 30mil magnetic sheets. (which don't seem to come cheap in small quantities).

His machine actually cut 30mil white vinyl sheet. He then "inlaid" a black insert to make it pop. But I only autocross so I won't see 100mph.

Or hell, why not print some numbers on a 8.5"x11" or 11"x17" and laminate it. Then use some painters tape to tape it on. Cheap/free and should hold up fine.

IMO surface area is king. I would stick with solid sheet and not individual numbers/letters.

I made a stencil out of some heavy paper, and use spray on temporary paint. After a couple of weeks, it rinses right off.

I have also used the static cling stuff. And that works really well for the first 6-8 applications. After that, I have to add some tape to the leading edges.

I used 3 small pieces of clear package tape on the front edge of each one, and yes they were 140 mph tested that way.

Would you happen to have an extra "1"?

actually if you have an extra digit of any sort I'm interested. I just need to be able to change numbers just in case someone else shows up with the same number at whatever track event I go to.

I can't use magnetic on my fiberglass Corvette, so I went with reusable vinyl and am very happy with them. I can get a whole year's worth of track days in on a single set, maybe more.

I ordered through solo performance, lots of options for styles and sizes.

When you bought them, was there any markings to identify what material they are made out of? I have someone to design/cut numbers for me but he doesn't have any experience with re-usable vinyl.
