Lapping Days Power Steering Issue
Last week I went out a the final Lapping Autox event. Just after my last session I got into the pits and popped the hood. I saw that my powersteering fluid had forced its way out throught the cap. I took of the cap and it was hot as hell and steam was coming out of it as it hit the cold Wi air. The whole unit was way to hot to touch. I have never notice this happening before. What is up? Do you think the pump is going out? Should I change the fluid seeing how it go so heated?

Not sure if you have a stock PS cooler. If not it is highly suggested to fabricate one. A 3 row auto- transmission cooler will suffice.
Stock F-body Pumps are know to be pretty weak too. Many of us use the Turn one power steering pump Turn One
Use somthing like Redline PS fluid too

Frequently "change" your PS fluid. A full flush isn't necessary. Use a turkey baster and remove the fluid in the reservoir and replace w/good fluid of your choice. Do this prior to each event this next year. It'll help keep the pump alive. The heat does kill the fluid if left in too many events.

You make want to check this out. http://www.go-fast.org/z28/pscool.html
I haven't done it to my car yet, but hopefully before next year's first open track day it will be in there.

Bottom line these pumps aren't for the road race course. Sustained RPM are too high. They are living on borrowed time from day one. Regardless of your precautions, coolers and flushing and new fluid will only prolong the inevitable.
Consider them consumable items in the same category as brake rotors.

You may consider an underdrive pulley on your power steering pump when you do open track days. It may catch driving around the paddock but will be fine on the track and help not to overheat your pump.
