Default Light Weight Clutches - Who's Ditched Them?

I've seen alot of threads where people say the lighter clutch hurts launches at the track. And I've also seen where the guys who run lighter clutches love them - myself included.

So, my question is - has anyone here pulled their lighter clutch out in favor of a heavy clutch in order to improve performance? how did it go?

I'd Consider going to a 14lb clutch if it wasn't 6 grand lol but I can not imagine wanting a 58lb clutch again.

Every one of my clutches has gotten lighter. From stock weight to stock sized aluminum flywheel, now im down to 7.25 Quartermaster and a 9lb tilton flywheel that has plenty of speed holes in it. Would go lighter if I could afford it. Heavy flywheels and clutches are for trucks.

My RPS unit is 14 #'s lighter than my old Ram power grip. Would never want to go back to a heavy clutch. I don't take my car to the track so launches aren't a concern but high speed driving up winding mountain roads is the best it's ever been.

I think 25lb or so is the sweet spot. 28 being fine to. You should really push that clutch a bit more Mr Monster.

That heavy clutch **** is for dump trucks not performance cars.

Stock flywheel is lighter than that...

My assembly is 19lbs. I've very briefly thought about going back to stock-style so I can actually launch the car without blowing up a diff, but I don't think it's worth it. Might be able to get away with going to a stock sized Tilton master to get more slip back instead.

First Auburn survived 22 ~3500rpm drops, 2nd one grenaded on the seventh. If I go back to a 3/4" bore I'll pick up a spare Truetrac and see what happens.

Never 60'd better than a 2.0 but the softest rear spring I ever ran was 400lb and A7s don't hook.

Love a 12lbs aluminum flywheel and McLeod RST twin disc! Revs like crazy and drives well.

My total assembly weighs 31 lbs, but at less diameter vs stock. I thought it really woke the car up. Definitely made it faster in 1,2 gear. Significantly faster.

I keep thinking even if the clutch hurts the launch, it's faster the entire rest of the way down the track.

or is it just a learning curve with the lighter clutch? I saw lazerlamonte got his launch down on a 19 lb clutch, so it must just be a learning curve?

I personally think the weight of the car has alot to do with it.... also the tire choice/tire height and launch rpm.
Some guys leave the line at 4000 rpm while others leave on the rev limiter depending on how the track hooks and what your engine likes.
It's a learning process for sure as everyone setup is different.

Any issue with over-travel? I used one for a bit and thought one of the issues I was having could have been caused by it (it wasn't). Never liked the pedal stop setup I had so I went with the Tick master as it seemed to eliminate any possibility of that being a problem area. I think a stock sized Tilton in the Tick adapter is going to be the best of both worlds and it's a cheap swap.

Are you guys still using 10 bolts in your cars? Would love to be able to ProSolos again if only for the free Hoosiers, but I don't want to break it 800 miles from home.

I think weight of the car for sure gonna affect it. 1st gear ratio also.

I made a adjustable pedal stop for lazerlemon 1le and my 99 ss. With that type a clutch a pedal stop is a must i think. Pedal throw is about 1/2 - 2/3 of stock. A smaller clutch master would likely be a all-round help.

Got any pics you could share of the pedal stop you can share?

I have a tick master in the car already, I'm just going to swap in a 3/4 tilton master and see how it does. Tilton recommends a 3/4 bore for the release bearing I'm going to use.

Same with my Quartermaster. Let me know how it works out for you, likely in my 2018 plans

Pretty simple to make. It bolts to the clutch pedal with the 2 small holes (10/32 size). I used a 1" tube and smashed 1 end shut. Then a carriage bolt 3/8 -1/2 works fine. I welded a nut in the end to screw the carriage bolt in then used another nut to jam nut it where i wanted. That way it's adjustable to.

Since we talking clutches.... anybody here ran a ACE or a Textraila clutch ? If so I wonder how they compare to the more popular monster or McLeod clutches......
