Question Happy with your new 12-bolt or not?

Reading the posts here can really frighten someone on the verge of dropping over two grand on that new 12-bolt.

This purpose of this poll is to try to quantify the percentage of people that are unhappy with their 12-bolt because of breakage, leakage, or excessive noise. Either Moser or Strange, whatever. If it's broken in, we want to know about it.

And please post up if you're happy with your setup... sometimes all we ever see are the "problem posts", and we have no idea what proportion of the total customers these problems represent.

Thanks in advance for your input...

Rich

I got the strange and am very happy with it. Have about 1,000 miles on it and no problems. The only thing is I wish I knew I would need a new torque arm at the time, and I wish I had painted it before I put it on the car. Otherwise, its been awesome.

We have neither a Moser, nor a Strange. We have a 12-bolt built by Tom Differentials using a KTRE housing. We have made numerous passes without a single problem. So we are happy with ours, especially since we purchased it used.

My Strange howls after hitting the strip.

I'd be interested to know if you Strange owners with quiet rears raced your cars hard...

With the talk of problems with the rears I'm thinking some of it might be in the mass-produced factory setup of the gears when the rears are built for shipment. I think when I order my Strange I'm gonna rip out the gearset and get one of the guys here who is a genius at gear setup to do mine again just to be sure.

Great thread to throw up by the way! I'll be watching this one. Rear is coming next year for me...

All this gear noise can be prevented, y'all.

A lot of it has to do with how much time the assembly line spends setting up the gears, which apparently ain't too much. If they're too tight, not in line, etc. they're gonna howl, and that's gonna kill your gears, and the heat from excess wear on the gears'll shorten the life of your whole axle. You owe it to yourself to pop the cover off and check the gears for proper backlash, pinion depth, ring gear spacing, wear pattern, bearing preload, and adjust them as needed. After all, you spent over $2000, so make sure it's set up right before just throwing it in, and it'll last you a LOOOONG time.

That's a valid point, but there's also the argument that if you drop that much coin on a unit, it SHOULD BE SET UP RIGHT!!

Oh, no doubt about it, Dude. If I wind up putting that much down for an axle, and STILL have to set the gears up properly, then heads are gonna roll!

Have a Moser. No problems. Road course miles and 40+ passes half of them in the low 10's. I had a friend check the gears and installed a solid pinion spacer. We just took it apart and checked it and it's fine. I think some of the problems can be prevented.

Quite on accel (like I could hear it anyway), loud as **** on decel. That makes sense after looking at the coast pattern on the teeth. It was a little bit of a sacrifice to get the drive pattern and backlash perfect.
