My 12 bolt is loud but I love the fact I don't have to worry if I'm going to break it.

My Moser is loud as hell. I am thinking about having a sound barrier put in the back for it. It drives me insane driving around town.

In retrospect, my Strange MAY be still quiet if I didn't have wheelhop issues.

The wheelhops are now gone, but the whine is still there

I have an intresting view on this.
10 Bolt: My friends I rebuilt with 3.73 gears and it made mild amounts of noise from 50-60 MPH pulled it after 2000 miles and went to a 12 bolt for safety.

It was a Moser with a set of 3.73 gears in it, it made about the same amount of noise as the above 10 bolt. We didn't have a bearing press and didn't know anyone with one so we the bearings on that wasnt fun.
His backing plates (LT1 maybe different) were bigger and it was the biggest pain in the *** to tighten the nuts down. We had to cut a socket in half and flaten out the sides and use a wrench on it.
Overall the gears noise was nothing but the install was a nightmare, even with a press it still would have sucked. I constently harressed my freind about how he should have gotten a strange because moser are loud.

10 Bolt: Mine blew up/posi went I assume. I did a really hard 3-4 shift at 90- 100 whatever red line would be with 3.42. The car shot arcross the highway into the other lane and almost completly off the road. I assume the posi gave way and put all the power to one wheel but not sure.

12 bolt goes in, strange with 4.11's and all the goodies full assembled $2500 piece. Take it down the road after the jack stand break in and it whines no it howl its the loudest thing I have ever heard. If you have ever heard an old style fire whistle that winds up and down thats how this thing sounded. I thought about wraping the thing in sound deadiner. But I suffered with it, after all 4.11 are just loud stinken gears acording to strange and the sponsor that sold it to me. I take it to the track and beat the leaving **** out of it with ET streets with limiter dumps. Takes every thing I can give it and just keeps whining LOL.

I recently put in a new strange 4.11 gear set result small amount of noise from 50-60mph less than the 3.73 in my friends 10 or 12. 4.11 can't be quiet my ***. When I took the orginal 4.11's out I checked the patter for grins not even close, backlash wash 30 some thousands. Go to pull the pinion 2 foot breaker bar with a pipe reaching to feet out side the car on a jack to get it loose. Finaly got the nut off and he locktited the yoke on with a ton of it. Pound the damn thing out, the bearing was blue from heat from to much preload.

I voted nah for the strange. It was easier to install than the moser but the noise stank. I am vary please with how solid it has been. IMO I would buy either but tear it right down and reset the gears or get it empty.
Thats my story, sorry for the length and grammer.

Got my 12 bolt with 3.90 gears from Bob at EPP, so far have 500ish miles on it and it is doing great. Going to the track this weekend to see how it holds up to some et drags.

now i'm worried...gonna go with the Moser b/c of the downtime with Strange - waiting for them to press on my reluctor rings and install my backing plates...a 3k investment is too much for me to end up where I would have been if I just stayed stock, yanno?

I'll check and re-check all of the specs, use some friction modifier and hopefully I can add another nod to Moser

Holy Crap! I have no freaking idea what to do now. I planned to order a Moser 12 bolt and originally thought I would ask the question about 4.10's or 3.73's. I just spent $1700.00 rebuilding the crap out of my 10 bolt to have the 3.73's last two weeks. I guess I should mention my rwhp is probably higher than my sig states because of many reasons I prefer to not state.

Here is my plan and any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I plan to begin the build of a 421 ci bottom half with a 252 / 260 + duration cam. Shooting for 575 to 600 rwhp, and nothing more. I want my car to stil be streetable.

All of the posts have definitely steared me to another 3.73 and to make darn sure to check all of the bots to torque specs. Is there anything else I should know?

For example, my friend (who builds race cars) is directing me toward lowering springs, with drag bags, and double adjustable shocks.

Most likely, wheel hop is what killed my 10 Bolt with brand new 3.73's in it. The sad part is I was using my street tires on concrete.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Strange 12-bolt 33-spline still holding strong and quiet as a mouse. 3.73's ... beat the hell out of her for the past 7 months with MT Drag Radials. Solid as an anvil ... Eaton Posi.

Excellent! I plan to order the Strange 12 bolt, with eaton posi & 3.73's tomorrow. Was planning on a 33 spline Moser with Eaton & 3.73's, but I'm thinking Strange instead. I checked with my buddy and the UMI adjustable torque arm should work fine with the Strange 12 bolt. Did you open the rear end up and check torque spec's or just bolt it up and go on? btw - thanks!

You might want to reconsider and go with the Truetrac, whether you go with Moser or Strange. The Truetrac does not have clutches that can slip, as does the Eaton. Our '95 Formula's Moser 12 bolt with an Eaton is starting to do the one wheel burn-out when we heat up the tires. We would have gone with the Truetrac when we purchased the one for our Formula, had the Truetrac been offered at the time.
Eaton recently purchased the Detroit Truetrac, by the way. Bob

Go for what you are comfortable with. In my past experience and research, if you use the non-synthetic oil, the kevlar clutches in the HD Eaton rearend posi units will not slip as described above ... not any more than any other clutches in any other similar posi unit.

Plus, the Eaton is rebuildable and will not cost you the price of a new POSI unit if it ever breaks. The problem I have seen and heard of are all associated with the synthetic oil being used. Eaton specifically WARNS you not to use it! My Performance Shop (Next Level Performance) installed it, I believe, as-is from Strange. Good luck on your choice.

It's cheaper, as well. Just do your research and don't buy anything based on what any one person says. Do countless hours of research, then, do what you feel is right for you and you'll enjoy it for many years to come.

Would be great for an all-out race car ... mine's built for street-n-strip. I've heard they're the best for the right application. HD Eaton best suited for my needs. Anybody know of another posi unit from the same performace class of the two above? Some say the Zexel-Torsen HD ranks up there close. If you have something different in a 12-bolt, what is it and can anyone compare it in a Moser vs. a Strange ... purely from experience? Nosier in one than in the other?
