Default Another heads/cam LS1 F-body above 500 rwhp!

With heads/cam LS1s starting to make hp like the 408s from a few years ago, I thought I'd see if I could put into practice all the tricks I've learned over the years and upgrade my combination. It worked. The above graph was certainly the best run of the day (after a long cool down) and could best be described as a "hero run", but I had two other nice runs close to 500 rwhp. All runs are SAE by the way. Special thanks to Mike, Ben and Jonathan over at G-Force in Pearland, TX for slipping my car onto their Dynojet even though they were slammed with work. Thanks guys.

In a nutshell, I had a few things to prove.
1. I wanted to prove that you could make over 500 rwhp with AFR 205s in an F-Body if you followed the right formula.
2. I wanted to dispell some myths about cylinder head airflow, namely you can't look at the airflow at .600" to see if you'll make power, but more at the airflow at .300-.500". I'll explain my thoughts in greater detail later.

I decided to go back to AFR 205 heads and a larger cam instead of the AFR small bore 225s and a small cam that I had before. With the higher airspeed of the 205s verses the 225s, the larger cam has the same street manners as my smaller cam had with the bigger heads. These new AFR 205 heads are not quite your garden variety 205, rather they have a number of tweaks designed to work better with a FAST intake and a lower lift hydraulic cam. Notice I chose a very popular lobe and duration range for my custom cam.

I will start another thread going into greater detail on all the components in the build, but here's a short list:

AFR 205 heads with chamber opened up to 4.00" bore (to better unshroud the valves).
Standard 205cc CNC port work
Revised valve job for better low and mid-lift flow.
Heads milled to achieve 57cc chamber size (static compression 11.92:1)
Comp Cams 238/242 .605/.610 112LSA +3 cam with XE-R lobes
AFR upgrade 8019 dual valve springs. 170 seat, 450 open pressure.
AFR hollow stem 2.02 intake valves that weigh 98 grams each.
Forged shortblock machined by Erik Koenig from HK Enterprises, Houston, TX. Flat top Diamond pistons with 2cc valve reliefs.
7.400" pushords.
Comp R 875 hydraulic roller lifters.
Yella Terra 6645 Ultra Light shaft mounted rockers.
FAST 90 intake velocity ported by Tony Mamo.
Nick Williams 90mm TB.
No MAF (speed density tune by me).
Kooks 1 3/4" headers.
Custom y-pipe with LG Motorsports y-merge 4" collector, no cats.
4" Quick Time electric cutout.
10 bolt with 3.73 gears.
6 speed manual with Textralia OZ700 clutch.

Nice graph Patrick, love how the power doesn't fall off up top.

youve still got alittle bit of power left in the middle where the graph dips when they cross. Good job bro.

Here's where a lot of power was gained: The exhaust. Special thanks go to LG Motorsports for sourcing their incredible 4" y-merge collector and to Barry at Quick Time for his sweet 4" cutout with electric valve. We tested my setup with open headers with 20" extensions and this y-pipe made within 1 rwhp of the open headers, but made 10 more rwtq between 2500-4000. The LG Exhaust Merge is amazing.

That's me grinding some rookie welds, LOL.

No comments on the sound or how much it helped over kooks y-pipe?

The merge is an LG Motorsports exclusive off of their Corvette race car. I'm not sure if they plan on building more and selling them to the public or not. I can tell you that the y-merge alone costs as much as a budget set of headers though.

LOL, the welding was actually quite good, I just knew you'd be reading this, haha. Special credit goes to Kurt Decker with Decker Automotive for the use of his lift, his dyno, his smarts and his muscle. I could not have completed this 2 month project with out you brother!

The custom y-pipe was a solid 5-6 rwhp better than the Kooks y-pipe, but even more important to me was the change in tone. The exhaust no longer has a rasp/drone at 2000-2300 rpm. It's literally the best sounding F-body exhaust I've ever heard. I don't have new sound clips yet but I hope to soon.

congrats breaking the 500rwhp barrier.

Check out drgas.com They have a similar merge available. Itd be cool if LG started making 4" ypipes with that merge.

One question, why didnt you use the LSK lobes?

Because my head flow backed up above .600" lift and the FAST intake limited the airlfow gains above 280cfm. There was no need.

Awsome results Patrick! Just goes to show the right combination of parts does wonders, especially with a stock geometry head.

Very nice results Patrick!!!! What do you think the results would be if you dropped compression down to 10.1? You know where I'm going on this one.
