Default drive shaft

i goign to put a 12 bolt in my bolt on car and i need to know if getting a aluminium driveshaft is worth while. I have a 98 SS with factory shaft and need to know. What are some really good prices on some driveshafts anyways.
Will the driveshaft come close to getting rid of the power robbed from the 12 bolt rearend, or will it even help a little???

You already have an aluminum shaft. Installing another is not going to help your power to the ground.

My 2000 M6 came with a steel driveshaft. Those d@mn non z-rated tires. <img border="0" alt="[Banging Head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" /> I didn't know that when I bought it. I got a steel driveshaft and a top speed limiter. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="gr_images/icons/mad.gif" />

I have a 98 SS M6, boltons only, but i am getting a 8.8 installed soon and want to use slicks. A friend of mine said the driveshafts are weak and to upgrade, since i know nothing about what come factory i thought I would ask.

For an M6 running slicks I strongly advise getting a stronger shaft. If you were A4 I'd say the stock one would likely be good enough.

It's the Duralcan shaft carried by Mark Williams. I've heard conflicting stories as to the strength of this shaft lately. They (the guy I talked to at Mark Williams when I was shaft shopping) told me the shaft was as strong as Chromoly and almost as light as C/F. He said it was good for a 9 second car. I went with the C/F shaft because he said for 8 second aspirations that's what I should go with.

But, Rageman talked to someone there who told him it wasn't as strong as was reported to me. Maybe we can get him in here to tell us exactly what they told him.

Regardless, there is no doubt that the Duralcan shaft is FAR stronger than stock and would do well for you. For great strength at a lower price (but a higher weight) I'd go with a chromoly shaft.

Ok, here is what Rageman said...

"I just talked to some dude over at Mark Williams' and he said the metal matrix shaft isn't designed for heavy street cars. Only for Pro-Stock-type applications where the cars weigh about 2400. He didn't recommend it to me. He said anything over 2400 lbs. or so he'd go with a steel one."

Seems to me like if it's good for a Pro-Stock car it should be good for a streetcar even if the streetcar is heavy. Might need to give them a call for some clarification.
