Default 383 build with low oil pressure

just built and fired up last week and it has good oil pressure and then the oil pressure keeps droping unil it hits 0 at idle after the motor warms up. I know the problem is probably the bearings but I wanted some input first. It has a high volume mildon m series pump and a 7 quart pan. I dont have a problem pullin the motor and tearin it apart, I just want to make sure that thats what I have to do.

are you using an electrical guage? If so throw a mechanical on it to check.

Does it hold good pressure above idle/cruising?

Check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge first, what were your bearing clearances? This type of problem is usually a cracked pickup, an oil plug left out or not installed completely. Did you install the oil plug under the rear main cap?

it has a mechanical gauge on it and it holds pressure while crusing but only for about 15 mins and then it starts to drop...ill have to check those things when we pull the motor this week

Pick up too close to the oil pan? But you usually see little to no pressure under rpm. Something to check.

i had similar problem on mine. turns out it was a combination of two things.

1. had a (LT1) camaro pickup and a corvette pan, which put the pickup too close to the pan.

2. engine builder left out front galley plugs, doh!

What weight oil are you running?

What were the clearances?

Leaving the plug out under the rear main cap will not affect oil pressure once the oil filter is full the oil will just bypass the filter and go the path of least resistance.

I know that is posted in the Chevy power book but its be proven to be a false statement.
