400 reliable build
A friend at work just gave me a sb 400. I gotta send it to the shop and see if its worth rebuilding. I was wondering what would you guys do if you were goin
to redo this motor up. Just looking for ideas right now.

I bought a 406 with polished stock rods, trw forged pistions, a solid cam 248/252, afr 220 bought bare and home ported mild. car went 11.60 and 10.50 on 175 for 4 years was still going when i sold it. almost forgot, put flat top ross pistions and 5.7 rods in it and ran the same.

Not sure if I want to make it a stright drag motor or street/strip motor yet.
Plus I have a 350 4 bolt, 383 2 bolt, 327 out of my dads 63 split window vette and might be able to pick up a 454 & 400 trans out of an rv for like $200.

You really need to stop posting up these one liners.
It's a 327 whats it worth.
Well are all the numbers on it saying it came from a vette of that year? Suffix code, casting numbers, date codes on the heads match date codes on the block, intake, carb, dist, water pump?
If yes then it's worth a lot, if you say it's a bare block then forget it.

first thing you need to do is figure out your goals-how fast, drag or street, pump or race gas,etc
second thing is you need to figure out how much you want to spend
then you can figure out what is the best route to go

the better 400 to build will be 2 bolt and personally I think a 377 stroker would be what I would do...As far as the 327 make sure its got fuelie heads which shoulda came on the vette..you can get some money out of it.If someone is looking for date code specific engines.
