Help With Mods
Okay, I'm finally getting around to moding my 01' automatic T/A. I called a local shop--the guy on the phone sounded like he was blowing me off but here's what he said. My question was mods to make the car a bit peppy. It's basically a weekend car. His suggestion and prices are as follows:
3:73 Gears $240 for Gears and $300 to Install;
Cam $650 and $600 to Install;
Headers $1,250 and $400 to Install.
So, we're talking about $3,500 here. He said that this set up will increase the car by 60 horses.
Is this accurate? I'm sorry but that's a lot of cash. For, say $1,000 - $2000 tops, what's the most effective mod package.
Oh, I live in Charlotte. I need a local, proven mechanic.
Thanks!!

How much you will gain really depends on the type of cam you go with. That's the biggest variable in those mods.
And $1,250 seems a little high for headers.
I would search around on here for info about those mods and what you will gain rather than just trusting one guys opinion on everything.

best advice i could give would be to give nick williams a call or pm him on this board.
gears sound about right, cam is probably high and will depend on what cam you go with, headers will completely depend on what brand you get. you can spend anywhere from 400 to 1200 on them. biggest thing i think is make sure you get a stainless set so they won't rust on you, but if you don't care about looks, a good 400 dollar set won't hurt you.
somewhere between 60 and 90 horses is what you're looking at.
most effective mod would be the cam.
good luck

The prices sound about right. The cam itself may only be $375, but when you add 918 springs, and pushrods you are right there at $600.
THe headers will be around $1200 if they are stainless (Kooks, QTP) with matching y-pipe.
The gears are about right. He's quoting you realistic gains. I'd say he's trustworthy based on him not giving you inflated horsepower numbers for the sake of it, and the prices are roughly what it will cost. If you want to save cash do the mods yourself like most people here.

CAM and Valvetrain package from TR should run you around $900 with all the gaskets. I went with the crane doubles ( whatever you do GET DOUBLE SPRINGS ).
LTH - I love my FLP LTHeaders, and I know my wifes DynaTech supermax sound great. FLP were like $1400 and Dynatech were 1500.
Gears: If you are local I have a set of Motive gears BRAND NEW that I didn't need installed after finding out that I have a factory freak that had 3:73s I will sell for exactly what I paid for them. I just haven't RMA'ed them back to TR yet. They are for a series 3.
If you can find a buddy, install is the price for beer and pizza. Well that and a buddy that knows how to do it. I was just lucky there.
So basically yah you can buy LOTS of stuff from the vendors on here, or if this place is getting them. See what the prices are on like MTI, Thunder, Tbyrne, etc for those same parts.
Something I didn't see listed, who is programming this bad boy? Making those changes are going to require tuning.
Good tune will cost you from $300-$500. Or you can buy EFILive with a license andLC-1 wideband from greenlightmotorsports ( vendor on the side bar here ) and do it yourself

Don't get too big of a stall on a daily driver because it will actually feel like a dog around town because it's always slipping @ part throttle.
Plus it's heating up the fluid. 3200 stall is a bit much around town.

you really wouldnt want to run say a 2.73 gear and a 3800...would def make some heat in there...
