First off go by a v1 or escort 8500 x50 used on ebay cause that cobra aint gonna help you. And ya you can go off the radio I went of my my gauges cause they light up when the key turns but dont go and plug in the fuse box or you will never get the door back on.

Honestly, i would recommend going with a V1. But considering you aren't asking which to buy, i would say wire the power directly to either radios accessory power or one of your cigarette lighters power wires (make sure it goes off with the car).

Several auto parts stores sell an "Add-A-Circuit" adapter. It's basically a right-angle mini-fuse adapter that lets you plug two fuses into one fuse slot. It's the easiest way to create a new circuit. Just crimp your power wire from the detector onto the wire on the adapter & ground the ground wire anywhere you want.

It would be better to just plug it in the cigarette lighter some states they are illegal its faster to hide it.

Just because it's hardwired doesn't mean you can't hide it. You can always yank the power cord from the detector, throw the unit in the glovebox, and tuck the power cord away (or say it's for a GPS or something).

Or just avoid VA and DC.

I live in VA and have a V1 hardwired so that it sits right on top of the rear view mirror. It's a little harder to see than just somewhere on the windshield. I just followed the simple instructions on ls1howto and got it done in about an hour. http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=14
It should be something similar with a cobra. Have you heard of "Access-A-Fuse?" This was something I was considering until I realized how easy the hardwire install was from ls1howto.

As far as hardwiring it into a cigarette lighter, aren't those always powered on?

Yes, in these cars they are. Not in all cars.

Right. I was assuming he was talking about hard wiring the radar detector into a f-body since we're on LS1tech.
