PAC SWI-X

Look it up on ebay...they are cheapest there. They are universal. AFAIK, your HU has to be remote control ready.

Yeah, the Pac- SWIX is the one to use. As stated, the adapter does not work on the Sony headunits because they use a different frequency. Our sponsor PFYC carries it.

If you go to the Pacific accessory corporation site they have all of their steering wheel control devices. They list the PAC SWI-PS as a device that will intergrate with Sony HU's if they accept a wired remote. I've already contacted their tech support and you won't have to sacrifice your HU's remote to use this setup. Also you won't have to drill holes in your cup holder to put it in.

I don't know if they make them anymore, but Soundgate is the best. You don't need to run the IR eye anywhere and don't have to worry about reprograming it when the power is disconnected. A downfall is that IR remote becomes useless with it.

Seeing as how most aftermarket radios use IR remotes, that Soundgate doesn't sound very usefull. What is it exactly?

I'm telling ya'll the swi-ps is the way to go. It just plugs into the back of the HU. No fuss. No Muss. The IR remote can still be used, also. The only catch is your HU has to be able to except a wired remote.

Yea, that's a big catch. My HU doesn't have a wired remote port. That thing looks about $114!
Is it really better than the PAC unit?

The PAC is nice also if you want to use the steering wheel remote to control a PC. That's what I'm doing.

One other thing, does the soundgate let you reassign the buttons?
I wanted my volume buttons on the left side and the PAC unit lets you do that. I don't know about the Soundgate.

Don't know if you were referring to the soundgate product or the Pac swi-ps, but I got mine for $50 from sonicelectronix.

The Soundgate.

The Pac swi-ps is cheaper at least, but still limited. Can it's buttons be reprogramed or are you stuck with the factory button assignment??

You can set different steering wheel controls with the PAC, not sure about the Soundgate though. The hookup is the same, except if you are running an Alpine or JVC it will be an easy plugin and no IR eye to mount.

I bought the PAC for my car, but during the install I came accross a Soundgate improperty wired from the previous owner. The part I didn't like about the PAC (and Soundgate) is that you had to run the IR eye somewhere, and I read posts that the eye can be a pain sometimes depending on where you put it at. Sometimes sunlight messes it up, sometimes it's people.

Soundgate pros:
Easy hookup, four wires
Always works with direct wire with Alpine and JVC headunits
Also has an IR eye
Don't have to reprogram

Soundgate Cons:
Not sure if you can reprogram the steering wheel controls
Price
IR eye can be obstructed
If "direct wire" hookup is used, the IR remote becomes worthless

PAC pros:
Easy hookup
Can program buttons to your liking
Cheaper

PAC cons:
Environment can affect it
Programing can be a pain
Have to be reprogramed if battery it disconnected from car?

the swi-ps is different from the swi-x the swi-x works with all HU's and uses an infrared eye to send signals to HU, but the swi-ps only works with pioneer or sony and is hard wired into the back of the HU. If you have an Alpine, Kenwood, or Eclipse you have to have a different version of the unit specifically for your HU. Either way, the important thing is that you have an option other than using an infrared eye setup. You can use one that hardwires into the back of the HU, if said HU excepts a wired remote.

Can be used with PC or almost any HU later on.

Programming is not that hard at all and only has to be done once.
Info is stored on chip and doesn't need power to retain data.
