Watts vs. sound lvl
Ok, so tomorrow im bypassing the monsoon amp and running my 4 6.5" kenwoods off of my HU, for now. my alpine HU is rated at 22w rms x 4, and the speakers are somewhere around 40w rms. my question is about how loud can i safely run my stereo w/o harming the speakers or HU. about how loud should 40w be? i'd like to not be able to hear any road noise at all. also, my volume control goes up to 35 max, and in order to get the loudness im looking for, i go up to about 18-20 on the control. now keep in mind this is running off of the factory amp with only 2 4" infinities in the rear actually putting out highs.

You wont hit 40 W, so for now -- you can safely have the HU at 3/4 full volume and know there likely isn't any distortion... nicer HUs can be played louder - but as mentioned above, an amp will be necessary to cleanly produce more power. Since you seem content with 18-22 on the volume, you should be fine.

yea, i plan to run an amp pretty soon. i can get 1 at walmart that will suit my needs for under 100. so, any estimates about what the factory amp puts out about 3/4 the way up? i dont want ear-splitting highs, but i want it to be clean when i turn it up. i just wanted to make sure i could satisfy my mom without blowing the speakers. im only 17, and she still owns the car till im 18, so i still have to get her approval on everything i do to the car lol.

well, running wires through the doors and under trim and rewiring some of the harness takes a bit of time, not to mention i had to do it outside in 10 degree weather cause my dad has the vett in the garage. im also looking to get a 4 channel amp, cause i wanna keep my wiring as simple as possible. if i got urs, id have to get another for the front, and the next thing i know i'll have 3 amps!

haha, well, i need that space for groceries! mom still uses the car for errands and stuff. its bad enough with 1 amp and 12" box in the back. when i go to college we'll be talking 3 amps and some bad bass. not to mention a nice box in the rear

hmm, im guessing it was pretty loud then. the system i eventually want to have would be nice and balanced, but with the ability to really vibrate my car when i want to show off. i like a decent amount of bass normally, and my 1 12" xplod and 400w ALMOST gets me there... but i wanna run atleast 2 12"s and around 1200-1500 watts. that should get me my rumble, but still maintain listen-ability when im driving around town

Yea, but its not all about the amps and size of the subs
You can have 4000watt amp from ebay and two 2500 watt 15 subs from ebay
and not hit as hard as some JL audio 10s on an 800 watt amp
Name brand and quality plays an important role
The sub box itself is almost more important as the amp and sub
For example
My set-up
100$ kenwood 1000w amp from ebay
139$ JL subs (2)
280$ Probox for camaro
and it sounds LOUD AS HELL!!
But 1000w system with some good 12s will sound great
shouldnt need a capacitor either with 1000w
My stuff will dim sometimes, but it all depends

yea, i know about name brands. all that crazy wattage seems to come from brands you've never even heard of. the most over watt-ed name brand i know of is sony, and they arent exactly bad subs. they are good for the money, but there is definitely better, i'll have to agree. one of my friends has 2 12" sony's in a bandpass box running at 700w and it is almost too loud for me. and im not a big bandpass guy either. i prefer ported and sealed boxes. too bad i cant find a ported box that fits and looks nice in a camaro trunk. i figure since i'll have to have a sealed box in the camaro, and since sealed boxes are naturally quieter then ported or bandpass, i'll need more wattage, even on decent subs. but im also realistic.. notice i wasnt the noobie and said i wanted 4000w and some 'killer' subs, lol.

Sealed is my favorite.... but im trying a ported box tomorrow and see how i like it
But I like the sound of Sealed its crisp, clear, and gets loud
I put a 500 watt amp and one 12 in a single cab ranger in a sealed box, and it hits hard!
I was driving to my friends house and he was outside by the time i got to the driveway when he heard me through his house
All it is, is an insignia sub and insignia amp..... have another insignia 12 for sale also.. hint hint

lol, man ur trying to get me to buy all kinds of stuff! im happy with my sony, but maybe a stronger amp wouldnt hurt...
idk, my sub hits hard enough for normal listening, it just starts distorting when i push it higher, and that is the amps fault. i just took my box apart the other day and sealed it up with caulk, and the bass got alot tighter! but im still leaking a bit of air where the sub mounts, so im going to the hardware store next week to get a better gasket material.
