Default Will a monsoon radio work without an amp?

I have a person on Ebay asking me that question. They are asking if this 99+ Monsoon radio will work in their 98 Grand Am. Physically it looks like it will work but if it does not have a monsoon system, will it work?

I think it might. My car has a monsoon stereo head unit without the amp thats supposed to be by the spare tire. People who sold me the car had 2 12" blau punkt subs in the car and some no name amp. they must've taken it out. My stereo works fine, all speakers are just **** tho. lol

There is absolutely nothing special about the Monsoon head unit. It's just an ordinary Delco unit with an extra label on it (early ones don't even have the label). It produces speaker-level output so it can be used without an external amp. The connectors on the back are the same 20-pin ones that have been used by GM since around 1988 so it will plug right into the factory harness of the Grand Am.

I unplugged my factory amp and the only speakers that worked were the back ones. Not only that but my 12's don't hit as hard as they used to or as hard as when that amp ins't plugged in. Stock head unit

I'm afraid I don't see what that has to do with the question in this thread but that is expected operation in a Firebird. All speakers in a Firebird Monsoon system except the tweeters (doors and hatch area) are powered by the amp. If you unplug the amp then of course only the tweeters will work (they're the only ones connected to the head unit). If you had a Camaro, nothing would work because the Camaro Monsoon system has all the speakers powered by the amp.

I missed the question apparently. I thought he was taking the amp out of his car to run it in the same car but now that I re-read it, I see it...my bad. Sorry
