C5 Z vs Supra

Default C5 Z vs Supra

Earlier this week, which I do believe was one of the very few nice days left to enjoy my Z06 before winter comes, I went out on a cruise to nowhere. I stop down at the shop to get my nitrous bottle refilled and talk about some future plans for both the Z06 and my Formula for the winter.

In short, I'm thinking about doing a 408 build for my Z06 to spray more and swapping the current engine my my Z06 over to the Formula and putting a stall/gear/tire setup on it too.

So, back to my story. I filled up my bottle and was continuing on my journey to nowhere just driving around. I think people had the same feeling as me about the day and were bringing their cars out realizing there wasnt going to be too many more nice days. An older guy in a atomic orange C6 Z gave me a thumbs up and complemented how my Z06 sounded at a stop light, but said "I'm too old to race. This thing would give me a heart attack so I better not. Your Z06 sounds great though. Nice car!"... I laughed and complemented his car back too. Tons of Vettes, mustangs, and fbodies out. Only problem, most were going in the opposite direction as me.

About 10 minutes later I hop on the express way... And a few minutes later, I hear a turbo spooling up to my left... I look over and it was a supra. Dont ask me what year and what it had for mods, because I dont know jack **** about them. All I know is it was the turbocharged one. It looked sick. It had a body kit but it wasnt tacky looking, actually looked great and had aftermarket wheels. The car was done right.

Traffic was really light. Nothing really ahead of us.

he slows down to 45mph so I downshift to second gear, purge the nitrous, and he beeps it off. After 3 beeps, we both leave at the same time. I instantly pull a car on him... And slowly creep away through 3rd, 4th comes, and he's coming back up on me. I shut down at 145ish and he was at my back fender.

I slow back down and he wants round 2. This time from a 60. He beeps it off again and I instantly jump out again, but not as hard. I'm holding my car lead through 3rd, shift into 4th, and he must have missed a gear because he let off.

One of the best races I've had with the car. I've seen the videos of some of these supra's from a roll, so I was nervous, expecially after hearing a turbo spooling. I'm just curious as to what kind of power this Supra was making. My Z06 is making 540rwhp/590rwtq on spray with a h/c/i/bolt-on setup.

damn close random race! The odds are you'd be lucky to line up next to a car like that (matched power) maybe once a year. Did he see you purge? If not I bet he was wondering what the hell you had in your car.

My purge comes up from between my 2 windshield wipers. I think he would have gotten me on the 60 roll if the race would have kept going. He must have seen me purge though, which was kinda nice to scare him a little too.. Since nobody wants to hear a random cars turbo spool up right before a race not knowing whats done to it. lol

Whats your car trap? Guessing in the 130s? Ima say a high 6xxwhp supra. Ive seen 1kwhp supras trap high 130s and low 140s lawl.

My best trap was 129.6

It has more in it though. I've only been to the track once this year with the nitrous setup, and that was on street tires.

Nice kill! It's always awesome to have random encounters, let alone a good matchup. Your Z sounds like a pretty stout setup. Wish there was a vid!

He was letting his turbo spool... So I had to give something back to him. lol

Thanks man. Nitrous is fun. Gained 185rwtq with the 100 shot.

I've always enjoyed the stock look with more power. Catch people all the time with it. I can park it at a car show or meet... And people who didnt see me pull in or know the car just assume its another stock Corvette. New Era Performance hooked me up with a pretty sick nitrous install too. The purge/activation switch is hidden, so looking inside/outside the car... Nothing unusual. Stock Z06 ehaust too. lol

I still dont consider it a sleeper.. Because it still is a Z06, but I've kinda made it less obvious that its faster than what it appears.

I would venture a guess that it wouldn't need 100rwhp+ less than the OP to still lose (though it was coming back). Some Supras aren't put together correctly (like all cars), but some definitely are. Good runs OP, the close ones are always the best.

Saw this car dyno infront of me. 800 on low boost and 900+ on hi boost and race gas.

Lol a local guys Supra trapped 142 I think when he was at around 650whp or so. He's at around 738whp now if I remember correctly.

Thats decent. One of the fastest ones down here making 1000+ thru a powerglide, built stroker motor traped 165 in a lightened up car (plexi windows and ****).

That's moving out for sure. He's actually at 768rwhp now that it is actual E85 instead of the winter blend of 70%. Here is his new setup:

At 26psi it made 680whp and at 30psi it made 730whp. The PRO EFI stopped there due to the ethanol content being so low. Once true E85 (85% ethanol) is available again-next spring-the PRO EFI will compensate and it will run full timing and allow for 36psi of boost. Larry said it should make 800whp then-on a Mustang Dyno-on a dynojet-who knows? My set up is the stock 3.0L inline 6, 6766 turbo, .81 a/r. Greddy 3-row, PHR intake manifold (probably not needed), HKS 264 cams, SP header, 4 inch dp/mp w/3 inch sp boost actuated cut out and the stock exhaust. Fuel system is 3 walbros and 1270cc injectors.

Overall I am pretty happy considering the lack of ethanol content and my motor does have 122K miles on it. Compression is decent at mid 150s across the board except cylinder 5, which is mid 140s. It made nearly 900 crank horsepower at 30psi so I can't complain too much.
