!!!need Help!!! How Do You Race?
I Know This Is A Dumb Question But How Do You Start A Race,
I Have A 99 Trans Am Automatic With The Following Mods,
Pacesetter Longtubes And Y Pipe
Slp Loudmouth Catback Exhaust
Lid
Bellow
Mas Air Flow Sensor
Filter
The Problem Is When A Car Comes Up To Me And Wants To Race I Just
Leave It On Drive And Go From There. I Know That's Not The Right Way To Do It So Could Someone Tell Me How To Start. Thanks

It's a 4L60E. Don't shift it manually.

Here's my recommendation given your current mods:
From a dig at the track:
Drive around the waterbox. Do not get street radials wet. Do a light burnout...just enough to clean off the tires. Street tires tend to get "greasy" after long burnouts.
Pre Stage - Light the first set of bulbs. Let your opponent pre-stage prior to you staging (lighting the second set of bulbs).
Staged - There are two schools of thought when launching on stock tires.
1.) Foot brake it as high as possible without letting the tires break loose.
2.) Hold the brake lightly with your left foot then stab the throttle on
the 3rd yellow.
I find option 1 creates more tire spin, but yields the same 60' roughly as option 2.
From a dig on the street:
Clean off the tires a bit. Don't foot brake it. On green, don't stab the throttle or you'll be 3 cars back in a hurry. Quickly get into the gas in a smooth "linear" fashion until you hit WOT. That should occur pretty quick though. When I was just starting out, I used to count to myself..."One one thousand". By then you should be WOT. Stand on it until you see your opponent in the rear view.
From a roll:
You have to pick and choose the mph you leave at carefully especially with a stock stall. Stear clear of a 35-40mph punch. I suggest either 20mph or 50mph. If you're going to go from a slow roll, keep the tranny in drive ("D"). After you hit 3rd gear and are winding it out, throw it in over drive. The tranny will upshift on its own. If you're going from a faster roll, keep it in over drive ("OD"). My reasoning here is that I've found that the tranny "responds" faster from a slow roll when kicking down from drive as opposed to overdrive. It's personal preference really.
Whatever mph you go from, just put it to the floorboard immediately. You'll spin for a second, but nothing crazy.
The key to street racing is knowing your opponent. More importantly, knowing his/her disavantages and using it to your advantage.
Hope that helps a little...
