Question for you guys about tires
I figured this was the best place to post this in even though it isnt a race. Alright, say for instance you guys have some nice rims/tires that are just for show on your big hp car. With these show rims you dont have any traction from a dig. What do you guys do when your out and someone wants to race but you dont have your track rims on? Or do you guys put on your track rims on nights that you think you might be street racing someone? Or do you just ask if you can go from a roll? Thanks.

I run 17" MT DR's all the time. The problem is that there is no sidewall and
traction isn't happening anywhere in 1st or 2nd gear at WOT...even the
beginning of 3rd is trouble. I plan to run 15" wheels with and a drag radial
with a lot more sidewall as a daily driver wheel.
To answer your other question, from a dig...I have to pedal the **** out of it
in first and 2nd gear...same thing from a roll really. It's extremely annoying.

It really depends on your driving style, and what you prefer.
I have always liked "drag" inspired tires the the BFG T/A's, Eagle GTII's, Nitto 555's and others.
You can get a drag tire, like a Mickey M/T and run it, but it wont last very long and the ride might be a little springy.
There's a difference between a nice street tire and drag tire, but there are plenty of tires "in between" and other tires that blur the line.
I just got ZR1's so Im getting a nice set of street tires, because the sidewall isnt going to be very big, or 275/40

Thanks for the post guys. But I think you guys are misunderstanding maybe what I was trying to ask. I have a nice set of rims that are 18/19's which drag radials will not fit on. My car has about 600rwhp. I love the look of my 18/19s but I just dont get any damn traction with them. I guess I will just have to deal with it.

a drag radial or better due to the size of the wheel you're running.
You're SOL I believe if you run a 19" wheel. However, if you're running
an 18, you can run some BFG's.

Look into Kumho (don't know the specific model of tire) and the Toyo RA1s. They're made with the same compound as drag radials, but they have a stiff sidewall designed for handling. The traction is night and day when compared with a typical street tire, and seem to hook for me as well as drag radials. I've seen a high 1.8 60' out of a 275/40/17 toyo RA1.

I personally love the look of the fat large sidewall of 70's muscle cars. A set 16's might work out.
Or maybe run some semi slick tyres. They are softer compound than regular rubber but they won't have the sidewall movement a DR does, but should still be a big imporvement over normal tyres. In the corners they will be awsome.
On my TR7 I run Michellin Pilto Sport Cup tyres. The BMW M3 CSL has these stock. It's basically the same compound as the Porsche Cup cars run but with a street legal tread pattern.
Yokohama make some really good street legal semi slicks, the Lotus Elsie runs A048's, don't think these go big enough but the the A032's might. Certainly can be had in 18".
Notto 555rII are a similar thing although I don't know what sizes are available.
Apart from that then year you have two choices:
Q - Want to race from a dig?
A - sure but let me go and change my rims first
Q - Want to race from a dig?
A - No I don't get any traction but I'll race from a roll
Both could be considered a little gay, but if you ain't bothered then so be it.
Or simply run from a dig and be gentle on the gas and hope to make it up. I mean it's your chioce to run the wheels you do, so if someone beats you because of more traction and better driving then really you have to salute them as having the better and faster setup for the conditions.
Racing is so much more than just HP!

a slow roll.
I used to road race and have driven a couple of 600 rwhp cars, a corvette and a rear-drive porsche both of which hooked very well with 600, and I was in first at several parts of the track. It just depends on your suspension.

There is no chance in hell that any street tire will hold 600rwhp.

600rwhp in a drag race...even from a slow roll. It'll melt the tires
off the gosh damned rim. Maybe a centrifugal blown car that only
makes power upwards of 4,000rpm could possibly find some traction
somewhere. Nah...not happening.

If you step down to an 18" wheel and try looking at CCW's, they have custom fitments that will work with your ride. The tire I run are the new Falken Azenis RT615's. They suck when they are cold, but once heated, traction is awesome. At my low boost which puts me around 550 to 570 rwhp (depends if I'm heat soaked), traction in first gear is excellent on the street. At my high boost which puts me at 800+rwhp, I get a slight traction problem at the top of 2nd, but 3rd gear and on has full traction. I don't know if these tires will last, but I know I will be getting another set once they're bald. Another plus is if you like taking the turns, these tires are also good for that. If you're curious on the treadpattern, I have attached a pic of my rear tire. Almost like a slick, so I'm not sure it will perform well in rain.
