I have heard not to do it at all. There are instructions on how to do hit but I can find little on what effects it will have and if it will help or hurt.

I was wondering the same thing. What would adjusting the preload do anyway?

supposedly, it makes the steering more firm and it helps to take out play and slop in the wheel.

I have heard ALOT of neg comments about how you can screw up the rack so I have never tried.
I am not sure that it would do what you want. It is hard to find a lot of good trustable docs on this.

I am sure that I have read in a gm dealer manual that you should never adjust it at some point in my life.

Here is the best pic I have found to date:

http://www.brakeandfrontend.com/Arti...ting_ball.aspx

it still has no info on how exactly to adjust, what is too much, what is too little.

Hmm, I was hoping it would make the steering more lighter.

If you want to make the steering lighter, take some caster out of it.

It really only helps in de powering the rack. A lot of people adjust the tension out of it when they properly get rid of the power steering. I couldnt see how messing with it on a power steering system would help.

I replied late, haha. I meant how to take out caster. But that may throw off the alignment.

Taking caster out should reduce some steering effort but at the cost of having less tendency to return to neutral and less high speed stability. Your choice.

I have tried 2 degrees once but IMO it felt like crap. My car is back to 4 again but I am maxed out in the slots and I really want 6.

Caster is adjusted while doing an alignment. If you change the caster the camber and the toe will change. I'm not saying I recommend this but I was running at +4.0 caster and the steering felt very vague and didn't return to center very well. But the effort to turn it was easy.

Just take it to an alignment shop, they can set you up in a matter of mins, but I'm still not sure why you want to reduce steering effort.
