Default Our ugly factory calipers.......question

Has anyone used JB Weld to fill in the dimples and casting spaces...and then successfully either painted or powder coat them?

Not sure if powder coat will stick to JB Weld. I see the temp is no problem for powder coat, if it will stick to it prior to the baking process.

Or will chrome plating stick to JB Weld...?

Not sure how JB will hold up on calipers, but you can powder coat over it if it's thin.

Honestly I think you'd be better off sanding them smooth though

A coarse scotch bright disk on a diegrinder will smooth them right up

What I meant with the JB Weld was to kind of reshape the caliper by filling in the three casting spots on the front calipers and maybe even totally fill in the two U-shaped openings so you cannot see the back of the brake pads.

I was going to chrome plate everything (pics below)......or chrome plate the brackets and paint the calipers in red.

I don't see that working at all

You're trying to make them look like fixed calipers?

Most aftermarket calipers hide the brake pad so you cannot see it. All you see is a nice big, clean looking caliper.

Ours are just very ugly.

Regarding powdercoating over JB weld, PsychoSid and I have been fighting this issue. The problem we get is that JB weld tries to rise when in the curing process of powder coating. We've been trying to get a set of valve covers to cure just right after deleting some unused bungs for coil brackets, but it keeps leaving slight discoloration and minor bubbling.

We've tried JB Weld as well as the high temp JB Weld. He supposedly got some All Metal or something that is supposed to do well with powder coating, but it was so minor to me I just went with the JB Weld.

But yeah, I think the answer is just making CTS-V brakes work. There's no salvaging these stockers.

Maybe have a U-shaped piece of metal welded into the two u-shape cut-outs in the front calipers....then fill those three casting dimples with weld. Then grind smooth. Then it would be an all metal face to work with.....

Maybe....??

Any problem with filling in the u-shape areas? I don't think it will stop from using a tool for a brake job or anything.

I would say its designed the way it is for a reason. What reason that it, i have no idea. But i would leave it the way it is and just get them powder coated....or get some CTS-V brakes like stated before. They look great, its a big brake upgrade, and they perform very nice.

But do they cause the problems that have been mentioned..?

Do you still need the bearings from the Vette up front?
Will it upset the balance between the front and rear brakes...?

Are they a bolt on upgrade...?

You shouldn't have any problems.... As long as you follow the sticky and do your HW. I just finished up mine this weekend. They are for the most part just bolt on depending on how you do it. I went with the Camaro SS rotors and got the center bore bored out to fit my hub so that the contact is correct verse the corvette rotor option. I also went with a "less" aggressive pad for the front and a more aggressive pad for the rear to try to counter the front rear brake bias, but it shouldn't be to bad as our cars were too rear bias from the factory anyways.

The only problem you may have it wheel clearance, some have got away with 17" wheels but I had to go with 18"

yeah... idk cause these are the "hurst" brakes which are made by racebrake and I got the pair for just over $400...

each core from RB costs more than this whole set did, I don't know why these are so much cheaper.

Even though the chrome plate looks killer, in the long run, the brake dust will eat through the plating.

I had Sara's (2001 Z28) calipers and brackets painted with high heat flat black, and added high heat gloss yellow strips.

I had the casting lines shaved and the dimples welded up on my stockers before getting powdercoated. The decals were put under the clear. Also had the brackets podercoated as well.

I don't know what decal they used. If I remember, it wasn't a regular vinyl decal. It was a decal that could take the clear being baked on.
