Default All in one Home Theater systems

My dads birthday is coming up, I was thinking about getting him a home theater system, he doesn't need any thing nuts, just nice. For all intensive purposes an all in one package will do, he needs a new DVD player and a new CD player any way. I bought him a 55" Bravia last year, so he has a nice T.v to watch Mike Huckabee on, but he doesn't have any thing nice to listen to music on, plus his DVD player is older than **** and doesn't play a lot of newer stuff. Has to be some what simpler to use. Price range is $400-750

Contender thus far

For his needs, something like that would work just fine. I have been impressed with the newer surround sound systems in a box. Obviously your not gonna get the same sound quality as you would if you were to buy a receiver and individual speakers. But for the money, they do just fine. Im sure he will love it. Huge improvement over the tv speakers.

I think room size has a lot to do with what to buy. If this is for his bedroom, it a lot of power.

If this is going in a living-room it seems like it perfect. (165 watt per channel is good power)

If the living-room is fairly big and "Open" to the house, that sub woofer may barely put out enough "Thud" to offer some bass. Bass is deeper (more full) in a semi-closed to fully closed rooms. (allows bass to bounce off walls)

Verify the Sub is an "Active sub". Passive subs for home theaters, in my experience, don't offer much control over Hz.

I agree with Charlie... especially if he really is not an audiophile. He will be ecstatic, I'm sure.

ANYTHING is better than TV speakers.

It will be going in a living room, right now he listens to CDs on a cheapie walgreen's $20 CD player, that doesn't read discs half the time. The last home speakers he bought were in the mid 1970s, I don't even think women could vote back then, so I imagine he'll appreciate any thing. I thought about getting a Bose for him, but after reading the reviews, it seems your paying a lot for the brand.

Tylericious,

I'll look for deals, with cyber Monday I bet there will be some killer deals.

I have pieced mine together gradually. I got a 15" Cerwin Vega active and Bose satellites.

The amp is my last piece. Come on Santa!!

Been happy with mine too. Had it for 3-4 years. The sub did go out and wasn't repairable, but I got a better one for only $90.

For Christmas last year I purchased a Onkyo Home Theatre in a Box from www.newegg.com

It's been great so far. Paid around $400 for mine. Came with the ipod dock as well. If you end up buying a package like this be sure to get some extra HDMI cables.

I bought an Onkyo unit a few years ago. It sounds good.

The only thing I don't care for is the receiver has way too many adjustments and functions for my taste. I know. That's a weird thing to complain about, but sometimes simple is better.
