Default Cam lamp ideas... need some help

First off, this probably doesn't belong in this section, but it didn't really seem to pertain to any others so I figured I'd post it here.

I plan on building a cam lamp pretty soon, and was pondering ideas for a lamp shade. Instead of using a typical shade I was thinking about using a really big K&N filter, something similar to the RC-5139:

Here's the measurements on it:
Base Outside Diameter: 9 in (229 mm)
Top Outside Diameter: 6.625 in (168 mm)
Flange Inside Diameter: 6 in (152 mm)
Height: 7.5 in (191 mm)

Anyway, I don't really care to spend $80 on a lamp shade, or even the $50 I found for one on ebay. Just wondering if anyone knows a good place for maybe some cheapo china filters or something similar..considering it will only be for aesthetics and I really don't care if its a quality filter or not. I didn't have much luck finding anything that fit the bill. Just about everything I found was kinda small for a lamp shade.

OR... does anyone else have any ideas? I was considering a metal shade, but prefer something automotive related if possible. Thanks for any ideas guys.

im sure one of those spectre filters would be much cheaper.

i dunno how much light will actually shine through a filter though... especially an oiled filter. i'd think you'd want to clean the oil off first.

Yeah I was thinking about that, another reason why I figured a cheapo filter would be better. Oh well, still pi seeing options..

What are you using for a base? I want to do one for my son's room and I've been waiting to find one of those floor lamps with the heavy bases to take apart and use.

Thinking of just using the cam gear, may put little "feet" underneath it. If not I may look into something similar to what your getting at, or maybe a round piece of wood, smoothed and finished..etc etc. For the shade I'm also considering buying a few of these and just stacking them, maybe 3 or 4 tall and glueing them together. I really prefer the idea of a conical filter though.

I built one back in my college days. Used a spare crank pulley for the base, got a cheap white lamp shade and painted it black. Then I used a turbin wheel screwed on the top to hold the shade on.

Well, I got the cam yesterday, after measuring it seems like the conical filter would be big enough...still don't feel like spending $60 on a lamp shade though, lol. I'll probably end up doing it at some point though.

I plan on using the cam gear as the base, and some old school cloth-covered 2 conductor twisted wire. May just stick with a regular lamp shade for a little while, I'm also not too sure how much light would get through an intake filter. I also plan on using a pull string with a spark plug hanging from it for the switch.

Little update... just went with a regular ol' shade for now. IF I go with a filter for a shade later (although it really probably won't let much light through) the one in the OP is an inch smaller in diameter at the top and bottom as this one, and half an inch taller. I think it'd look ok, but I'll probably stick with this.

That's pretty awesome. What did you use for the cord? I like the look. How did you hide the cord from the socket to the outlet?
