Smile SO much for the oilfield!!!

Well started with Halliburton a little over a year a go. In the interview was told they were solid, in previous years went to 40 hours for a few months and then back ***** to the wall. I was just laid off. I worked as a diesel mechanic on mainly caterpillar and cummings and Detroit's . Looking for plant work now, plant maintenance.... any suggestions?

There are plenty of diesel mechanic jobs out there. Halliburton is quick to hire but just as quick to lay off. Some of these companies accounted for the production declines and budget cuts better than others. Good luck I hope you find something soon.

Sucks to hear about your luck, but you sadly joined tens of thousands of others.

Youll be fine, and ultimately youll realize how big of a favor they did you. Oil field might be making a swing around sooner then some think and youll have plenty of options, until the mean time...diesel mechanics are in big demand.

Try over 200,000 oil field workers out of a job. Mine ended 3 weeks ago. This is not my first rodeo, but before I was usually up and working again inside a month. After 3 weeks, dozens of resumes, calls to recruiters, nothing. It's pretty bad.

I've been in the oil/gas business since the beginning of 2006. So I enjoyed the ride up and got used to a lifestyle of not really having to worry much about money. then in 2008 it seemed as though my field was doomed forever. I was actually unemployed when I got married. How do you think my wife felt about that ceremony knowing her husband was a deadbeat unemployed speed junky with a race car in the garage. Anyway, it slightly picked up and I got to working again and making even better money. Because of this I was jaded and really we started living above our means. Not incurring tons of debt, but spending every dollar I was making. Then at the end of 2014 it happened again. Only this time worse. My first 6 months of 2015 was pretty scary and at one point we got pretty close to having to ask my folks for money to survive. We did not as i got a little work going and am now doing decent again.

I can promise you this.......we are budgeting and living a more normal lifestyle hoping that the next time it happens (and it will), we will be more prepared. By prepared, I mean having a cash reserve to live on for a while.

I was not fortunate in growing up with an education from my parents on living a financially responsible lifestyle, and Lord knows they don't teach you that in school (which blows my mind).

I've made enough money in the last 10 years that I should damn near be self sufficient without even needing a job, but it just all got blown on living a cushy lifestyle, having nice cars to drive, a nice house, eating out at fancy restaurants on a regular basis and an 8 second full size truck to play with.

Be smart with your money guys. I'm trying to learn this myself right now.

Rule of thumb is 6 months to a years worth of bill $ saved up. It saved my *** this time for sure.

This isn't my first rodeo. I entered the oil patch in 1991 and been through at least 2 major downturns and several minor ones. '98 and '08, got through 'em both. But this time around I didn't give a F. My company did the old "bait and switch" made alot promises (to get me to hire on) they didn't live up to, I was starting look for another job earlier this year when the bottom fell out. I simply didn't have a choice but to stay on. I literally had to drag myself out of bed to go work. Started coming in late, leaving early, burned all 40 hours of sick time (which I've never done before). I truly didn't give a ****. We all knew it was coming several weeks in advance, then a press release came out 1 week in advance. They gave me 6 weeks full pay, my remaining vacation, and uncontested unemployment benefits (you'd be surprised how many companies will try to screw you out of that, truly heartless...).

On top of that I'm not far away from being able to retire, honestly I could probably get by without a job and without having to give up anything. But what I do need is medical benefits, for myself and my family. Plus I just love what I do...I just don't always like where I'm doing it or who I'm doing it with

I have a few potential jobs and was studying for a test. Does anyone know how to make a saddle joint without using a template. It's measuring it out , drawing it on the pipe, with soap stone... cutting the saddle out and fitting on the other pipe. First one is a 6x6 conc 90 degree T . The other is a 6inch pipe fitting and 8 inch pipe conc. 90 degree T. If anyone knows of the measurement, can you please help me out on this. I read pipe fitters book, and understand what they are saying , but don't know how to draw it out on the pipe and how many points to do and then cut it...
