Default Just paid a TABC tax on alcohol.

WTF? All of a sudden there's a TABC 'reinbursment' tax on alcohol served at restaurants/bars? I figured it to be ~10% too...

When we order a beer it's gonna be MORE than the usual outrageous prices at a resturant? WTF?

From what I read on the comptroller web site, there's a 14% mixed drink tax. I'd bet that some places roll this in to the cost of the drink (for example, a $4 drink might "include" the tax). But some places can make more money if they tack the 14% on after calculations... a $3.75 drink plus a 14% tax equals a $4.28 drink. Makes more money for the seller that way. Kinda like ebay shipping charges.

I didn't hear about it, I paid it last night for the first time. I had $16 worth of beer and that's usually all Id pay plus tip but I had some mysterious "TABC reinbursment" tax added, which was $2.6x.

That exactly the way I understand it now.

http://www.cpa.state.tx.us/taxinfo/t.../tx98_547.html
Been around since Jan 2003 I guess, so yeah almost all places must just add it into the cost of the drink, since almost nobody has every heard of it.

From the comptroller website:
For example, you sell three alcoholic beverages for $10.50. The service check lists three drinks at $10.50 and a "tax reimbursement" of $1.47, which you computed by applying 14 percent to $10.50. Because you received $11.97 for the drinks, you must report that amount on your mixed beverage gross receipts tax report and pay tax on that amount, which would be $1.68 ($11.97 x .14).

Learn something new everyday huh? Guess I won't be ordering drink anymore at a resturant...much cheaper to buy the beer in Wal-Mart anyway!
