Default Fixed car.. found the problem!! tail house crap

So I fixed my car again yesterday... Found another tailhouse for the tranny.
Took the DS in to get it checked out, and found that 1, it had one hell of a wobble, and 2, the DS is too short??

odd if you ask me... It has all the markings as a factory driveshaft, yet is only measuring around 40.5 from middle to middle... When we check a new one it measures 41.5 from middle to middle.

The yoke part is sticking out of the tailhouse alot. I had asked this question before but I guess we went past it not thinking about it till yesterday when a driveshaft guy looks at me and is like, well I will tell you why you keep breaking something...

I would bet the rattle from this shaft being too short will cause some good vibration.. LOL
well that is what I have heard.. and it was not the whole steel shaft or aluminum shaft..
It was the fact that it was too short...

Looks like I am dropping alot of more money into the car just to get it race ready for next month... Dammit, but not..
oh well...

I"m wondering if I have the same problem because I just got my yoke/rearend/carrier all redone and I still feel a little "wobble" .

Well let me say this...
My car drives completely different... I use to think an odd whine sound was from the exhaust.. SLP... but nope... it was from the odd wobble for the DS...
my car feels like a luxary ride now... I dont feel like I am in a 60's mucle car anymore..
LOL

should of known it before, but I thought it was combination of road noise from the 17x11's in the rear and the exhaust sound, but all the sounds and **** I was hearing was vibration and the DS being fucked.....

LOL

I learned this after breaking 2 tail houseings all around 115MPH, and dammit....
that was my problem....
Car drives great now though...

Explain the whining that you hear...

I hear a whining when I am accelerating but I have an aftermarket DS. I assume the whining that I hear comes from the Strange 12 bolt with 4.11 gears. It seems to come from the rear of the car.

I wish that my car would whine from under the hood when accelerating.

The whining I was hearing was more of a loping whining... Sounds odd, but even one of my other buddies knows what i am talking about since he has ridden in the car before and after...

It was a odd sound, I have whining that comes from the 3.73's, but that I can tell what that is... This was different, almost like road noise, but also like..
**** I cant even explain what exactly it sounded like...
I know that it is gone now....

One main thing is the car is almost quiet.. other then the engine and exhaust.. Before I thought those 17x11's in the rear caused all the road noise, and odd noise I heard.. NOPE.. bad DS....

Hey guys... FYI on the Driveshaft Length.

Make sure you are measuring the driveshaft length when the weight of the car is on the axle... not when the axle is suspended!

The proper way to measure the driveshaft fitment is to raise the car, support the axle on jack stands. Remove the rear yoke straps, slide the driveshaft forward unitl it bottoms out.

Then measure from the center of a U-joint cap to the center of the cupped area in the youke. The industry standard is 7/8".

If it is too long, it will impart too much thrust on the output shaft and can damage the shims inside the tranny. Also it can damage the u-joints.

If it is too short there can be issues with the driveshaft yoke binding on the output shaft as the suspension is exercized. Also, It can wear out the Yoke prematurely. Not to mention it can cause vibrations just like Ira mentioned here.

Glad you got it together dude.

Be safe.

Thanks for the input on the measuring.. I did not know the verbage on what to say.. Middle of the.. LOL.. that is why I said middle of ubolt/joint to middle..

This is where it was measured. Exactly what you said is how my buddy showed me how to measure....
Then at the driveshaft store the guy even measured it and said the same thing.

Yeah I am stoked that I got this together again.. and did not break the tranny... got lucky 2 times...
So this time I am buying all the stuff I need. LOL

thanks for all the great advice gil...

I'm wondering if this is my problem too... I have a 12 bolt with 4.10 gears so I thought they might be whining and I thought the tires were causing some of the noise but our symptoms sound the same. I have a dennys nitrous steel driveshaft and I can actually feel vibrations in my back through the seats. Feels like an uncomfortable massage chair lol...

I would agree here.. the whomm whomm would be the DS... typically...
I got my DS from driveshaft specialist.
its an online place...
they were great.. I called, they made the shaft to my specs..
Shipped the next day.... fast, great, and it works...

But I would be careful with driving on the bad DS... I did not think it could do that much damage, but now I am wondering if there is anything else wrong..

LOL

guess I will find out this Saturday....

I went with a steel one again, since I am not a big fan of aluminum...
plus this one is new, and high speed balanced..

We tested the balance... this sucker is quiet even @ 125 constant....

still just curious why you went with steel over alum since alum is lighter, has less rotational mass, and can handle higher speeds..?

I talked with some guys, and they all said the same thing... That the steel DS can handle more HP then the Aluminum... They made some points, and we pulled up some mad HP cars specs... They all ran Steel DS's...
So that would be that reason.. As for the weight, the few pounds was not a biggie to me. I have a few other buddies who said they hate the aluminum shaft... their own reasons, not sure, but from what I had seen.. I was convinced that the steel DS would fit me just fine...

Also for the fact that I didnt feel like forking out 450 dollars for a new DS.. almost 500 after being shipped to me...

As for this nice new built to my spec steel DS, cost me 295 shipped to my door...
As for handling the higher speeds.. I am going to have to get a new rear end in the next coming year.. So that is another reason to get the cheaper of the 2. Since I will be needing another new DS in about 1 year for the new rear end...

With the power I am planning on putting down, I am thinking the stock 10bolt will not handle it....

yeah i have a steel ds...but I am only making 500 rwhp and I think a chrome moly would handle that just fine and be a little lighter.

I wanted a chrome moly also, but I figured since I am planning on getting a new rear end, I might as well wait..

Went cheap for the moment.

From what I have been finding it seems to be a common problem on the factory DS... kind of odd, but like was said above.. mass production DS's compared to a built one do not compare...
