Default help with alternator?

so my alternator has gone out atleast 6 times in the past year and a half that i have owned the car and we originaly bought a replacement alternator from autozone and every time it goes out we just bring it back and they give us a new one and me and my dad figured that we were just getting bad ones then we got one that last for about 6 months and then it went out and we put another one in on sunday night (ran fine for about 4 days the volt guge did seem to be a little higher then 13 ) and now my voltage guage is showing lowing volts again about 8 but the check guages light didnt come on, and it the check guages light has come on every other time so im wondering could it be any thing else? bought a new battery the duralast gold top so i dont think that could be it.

-i also have a small 10 inch sub

-every time the other alternators have went out they went out at high rpms

thanks you
- Adam

I had the same problems with the AutoZone alternators. Take my word for it they are straight GARBAGE. I went thru 2 of them in less then a month last year. Bite the bullet, go to the dealership and pay the ridiculous price they charge for a Delco refurb. That's the way I went, and have had no problems since.

Good luck!

I've walked in both of your shoes. I had around 7 or 8 Autozone alternators changed out in the matter of a year and a half. Some would last an hour, some a few days. The longest one that lasted was around 2 months. You save money on the lifie time guarantee thing but if your paying a mechanic and taking up time take off of work, you pay out the azz in the long run. Run away from Autozone stuff, I will never go back. Got it replaced with an O'Riley alternator about 6 months ago and no problem.

Same exact symptons you had too.

YOU my friend are either on borrowed time or one of the lucky lottery winners of the Autozone alternator that was put together right. . I guess one good story out of 10 horrors is possible. There was a thread about this a few months ago and I think about 6 other people chimed in on thier bad experiences with these.

When was the last time you changed your battery? Also when buying from autozone or orielly's make sure you purchase a "new" one not a remanufactured or refurbished one.

Make sure your battery is fully charged to go with that different alternator. Even the factory alternator can't handle trying to charge a dead battery and running the car for very long without burning up something.

The only things I'll get at Autozone is oil, plugs, filters, cleaners, wax, etc.

I buy actual parts at O'Reilly's.

Personally i would not recommend buying any electrical product from autozone, but do make such the battery is fully charged before starting the car , personally i like and have had no troubles with the Bosh alternator or starters from Pepboys if you have one close , another thing check is the wiring going down behind the alternator to make sure it is not shorting out and double check grounds. just me 2 cents.

Autozone FTL. But they do have rotors for a 93 MR2! They are the only parts store that had the right ones anyway...
