Default Powder coating engine block and heads?

Is there any rule that says you cannot powder coat and engine block or the intake heads? Getting to have machine work done to some and when they are finished I really wanted to get them powder coat prior to rebuilding them. Any ideas on if it can be done?

alot of work ,you have to prevent any powder from getting inside the block or heads.then you have to bake it .consider epoxy paint .

might be "safer" for lack of a better term to powdercoat it before machine work is done.. get the block cleaned and inspected... coat then final machining.

this is just my guess could be way off just seems like a better idea to me if you was going to do it

I'm not sure but I've thought about this also. If it were possible, it would have to be done before machine work without a doubt. and you would need a deck, bore/hone, hone lifter bores etc, basically a full machine.

yes, any competent powdercoat shop can mask off the critical areas of the block. i've seen plenty of LS1 blocks powdercoated at my local shop. it is Embee Performance Coatings.

heads would be nice powdered, but the short block.. engine rattle can paint man.. not worth it.. get the timining cover and heads PC'd. not the block.

I own a powder coating business and i actually powder coated my own block just to see. Results were good. I had the machine shop cook, clean and then tumble roll it. I then cleaned the block with an iron phosphate bath and powder coated it chrome. Then had them do all the maching after words. After 18 dyno pulls very minimal coating loss. None that can be seen with engine assembled.

I would imagine that it would be difficult to get something with the mass of an engine block warm enough in a powdercoat oven evenly unless you have a lot of time or a fairly serious oven...

I powder coat engine blocks all the time,I have a set of heads/oil pan I use just for powder coating and it saves alot of time with covering up the engine.Never had any problems actually over time it starts to look better from the heating/cooling of the engine

My block is powder coated. It was done before all the machine work, which is the only way to go IMHO.

so sorry to bring this back... but how long do you think the coating would last? if it doesnt last long I dont think I'd do it. I saw that when you coat your headers with that special coating (1200F) you bake it on to set it... do you do that with engine paint too to make it more resistant?

Anyone know how the powdercoat affect the ability to remove heat from the engine block? I'd think the powdercoat would insulate and wouldn't allow much heat rejection to the engine bay.

How did you cure the powder? Do you have a big enough oven? What do you think about using a heat source to go over the surface, slowly to set the powder and then let normal engine compartment heat to finish the cure?

I'm not sure I would powdercoat an aluminum engine block and heads, as it would inhibit cooling to a degree.
