Default Need help choosing a welder

I'm looking to purchase my first welder and needed help choosing which to get. The welder will be used mainly for car projects the first one being a turbo hot side. I was generally going to get a lincoln 135 or 140, but after a lot of reading it seems that these welders will not be able to weld the t6 flange I am looking at because the t6 flange is a half inch thick. So which welder would allow me to create a merge pipe with the t6 flange? Would a lincoln 175 be sufficient? there is one for sale locally for 400 which sounds like a good deal. Also would a wirefeed welder be better? by the way I am looking at mig welders because they seem to be easier to use. Thanks

You may be able to weld the thicker flange by multiple
passes and a deep "V", but I question the suitability of
MIG for this work. Can you get the wire material you
need for the parent metals you are working with? And
figure there should be some heat treat pre/post, are
you already equipped with some sort of gas rig for that?

There is a pretty good post on this not too long ago. The Lincoln 175 Mig for 400 is a good deal. You will have to have 220voltage to run it. what ever way you go Be sure to get an Argon tank and stay away from flux core wire. It is nasty. a mig is the way to fly because it can be used for more. It is hard to weld thin metal with an Acr welder.

Well I figured I'd spot weld the flange and just have some one else do it. So your saying I'd be better off with a tig? What do you mean by wire material? Like filler rod? I thought I could weld without gas, but if I need gas I can pick up a tank. I can run a 220 volt at home my dad's pretty savvy with that stuff so he can help with that.

I ended up getting a Lincoln 180hd with tank for $400. I think it was a pretty good deal just gotta run 220 now. It came with a mask which was crap so I let the guy keep it lol.
