Default Is this Mandrel?

hey guys, I was at a local exhaust shop, and they have a "master bend 5000" or "bend master 5000"

one of those two, and they said it was a mandrel bender, I took a picture of a small piece they bent, but it decreased the diameter when it was bent? It doesn't have the "wrinkles" of a "crush" style bender.

I just didn't know if this was actually a mandrel bend, since the ones I buy from summit are the same diameter all the way around (e.g. a U-bend)

that is not a mandrel bend, mandrel bends have no creases or deformation of the pipe.

Good luck. I couldn't find a shop locally that had a mandrel bender either. Very expensive equipment. I just bought what bends I needed online and brought them to the muffler shop to get installed.

you can buy the individual bends or have your muffler shop fill the pipe with sand before they bend it - not quite perfect but damn close

You will not find ANY typical muffler shops that have a mandrel bender. They cost $25K plus, unless you get a piece of crap and that kinda defeats the point. Only very large production shops have them.

at my last job we did a lot of big rig stuff. back in the back there was a mandrel bender that they bent 5 inch exhaust on all day. it was pretty awesome. i worked second so all the big wigs were gone. at the end i the shift i went back there a couple of times and screwed with it some. it was pretty interesting. i wish they had a 4 inch die for it. i would have built me an exhaust for the ol'heep. oh, and one day it broke down. they had to get a new piece for the ram on it and it was like 10 grand or something like that. i think the bender itself was around 70 or 80 grand new.
