Default California SMOG and other questions

I will be moving to CA soon and have a few questions:

1. Do I have to get my car SMOG checked?

2. Do I have to get it registered if I have an apartment and out of state address?

3. Visual inspection? What if I have headers and other equipment that is noticeable?

4. Tint?

As far as I know, if you have a drivers license out of state and an address out of state you don't need to register the car here. I would do everything possible to no register here because those headers have to come off if you want to be CA smog legal.
Check out this site, it might be able to answer your questions

You can pull that off for 30 days legally. You can extend it a bit if you maintain that address and insurance.

So in order to register the car there cannot be headers on it? Even if its tuned to pass emissions?

thats correct the law states that the cats can not be moved at all ( long tubes a no no) from their original factory location.

as far as tint goes technically you are not allowed any( well pretty much) on the front windows ie driver & passanger. the back window can be painted black fro all the law cares. but like most people in CA we tint the side windows anyways, its only a fix-it ticket

ok so what do you guys do then? oh wait let me guess.

1. get inspection with stock equipment

2. pass

3. go straight to garage and swap all the good stuff back in.

4. wait till next inspection

i dont think so. As far as i know if your going to be a resident in CA you have to get a CA liscense within 10 days. But if your in the military i think it might be different

This is one way to circumvent the system. The other is the residency method brought up earlier (keep it registered out-of-state).

No one is suggesting a legal loophole because there isn't one.

Both options will work for a while.
If you get pulled-over for any reason, the cops will continue to keep an eye out for you. If they see you again, you'll really get tagged....
If you go the change it for the smog check and change it back, you will get away with it until you happen to hit a roadside check or roadside monitoring station (both are in place and happening)
On the inspection, a few stations will turn a blind eye as long as the cats and the rest of the emissions hardware is hook-up and working. I would be more worried about having a cam in the car. With the HOT cam in my car, I just barely pass (and I do mean JUST barely). I have all the emissions hardware in place and operational. I do have a custom tune for the cam, but it is still close.

NovaTodd thanks for the info and what cam are you running because I want to drop one in but am trying to find one that passes the smog check. I was told you can go higher than a 224 if you offset the intake and exhaust timing.

I am running a LT4 HOT cam. I don't remember the specs, but it it is real close to the 224 deg duration.

We are trying to spec out a cam right now and are trying to get the max power and still pass the smog check. Will probably go with a Futral custom for the LS1. I may have to invest in HPtuners so I can tune the car myself and not have to go to a shop all the time.

To be safe, a lot of people go 224 224 114.

Although it is possible to get larger to pass...ITS ALL IN THE TUNE.

I am originally from CT so I am used to **** laws, getting pulled over, and some of the worst taxes on earth. Oh and I ride a lot so CA here I come! Well, when I get a job out there. Any Air Traffic Control openings out there? Pilots needed? Web developers? Firearm consultants? Motorcycle tech positions? Anything lol

You can have shorty headers if they have a CARB number, but those arent really sold out of Cali. Other wise yea...no LT's
