Default Really good deal on a 4th gen?

Have a buddy that does a lot of work for the local car clubs. I've been looking for a new car to replace my beater and he happened to find a 98 z28 with 120k in really good shape. T56 shifts great so no worries about the tranny going out and he worked a deal so I could pick it up for $4500.

Ive always been a third gen guy but blew my motor for the 4th time and parted out the car so I figured a 4th gen would be the next step up. Just wanting some advice if yall think its safe to buy a 4th gen with that many miles?

NADA value is 7k so its a good deal Im just worried about having the motor go out or something. Any thoughts?

body looks good garage kept for the most part. The guy also installed a borla catback, short shifter, lid and I think a few other basic bolt ons but hes not a racer just likes driving nice cars. I dont have too many doubts about it just never made a habit of buying cars with over 100k for more than a few hundred bux.

Driving a 91 volvo 740 right now and going from my 91 firebird with a 383 lt1 and built stalled 700r4 makes me feel dirty.... lol
I was thinking about getting another third gen but figured for that price if its a good car might be a better option.

yea i know what you mean, theres alot of guys on here with over 100k miles and modded and no problems.. If you keep up with maintenance on your car, i think you should be fine. and you cant go wrong with an LS1 lol.

Oh dont worry about the milage, the LS1's have a very very long lifespan when maintained correctly, if the body is clean, and so is the engine and tranny, go for it, a friend of mine bough his 98 LS1 with 100,000 miles, and he just hit 140 ish and he abuses her EVERYDAY, has some bolt ons on her too.

go for it.

Just worried cause I know myself and it won't be long before I start modding it.

Go for it, a couple weeks ago i bought my 98 Z28, Had a SLP cold air box and cat backs, so it was generally unmolested.
It had 89,000 miles, VERY minor body flaws, you couldnt tell unless you were leaning over them, 6 Speed manual, T tops. Got it for 5600+400 for taxes and plates.
Has generally nothing wrong with it, but ill need new front tires soon, and probably new brakes.
Before summer is over im going to try to get an underdrive pulley, a ram air style induction, and smooth bellow.
This weekend im going to hit 90,000, so i think ill seafoam it before the oil change, should be a fun summer though, good luck with yours.

If its clean and runs good then pick it up man its not really how much its worth but how bad you want the car I was so picky when I was looking form mine and could not find one anywhere but I ended up getting a 02 z from the original owner with 100k miles exactly for 9k

It really depends on the prior owner(s) and what they used the car for. Most important was the maintenance. It could be a decent deal with that mileage at $4500 and give you a few solid years or an engine ready to blow up. If you can't get the answers then it will be a real gamble. $4500 isn't just pocket money to throw away. Be careful and good luck!

* Just a side note: Where did you get that $7,000 figure?? That seems way too high for a 'private party' transaction. That would be extreme retail.
** I just looked at www.kbb.com under 'private party' values in my zip code. That car should not be a dime over $5,000 unless buying from a dealer. Disagree all you want to about KBB pricing being too low but I agree in this instance. It is not a good deal at $4500, just an average 'everyday' deal, provided the car checks out.

Happy 4th!!

7000 is the clean retail value on nada for that mileage.
My bank said to use NADA to get the value cause I needed to buy a car that had 10% equity in it.

That is not a retail car. That would be typical bank advice and not in your best interest. It is not surprising how little they equate 'retail' with real world pricing. Everything is 'book' with them. Nothing else matters.

That's a good deal. If it checks out, go for it.
