Default Wheel painting experts, I need your help!

Hey guys. I tried searching but as usual, no results.

Can anyone guide me on how to properly paint bare aluminum wheels? Are there any good guides out there? Any good step by steps?

I'm painting the centers of my TTII's black this weekend and would really like this to go without a hitch.

Any and all help is very much appreciated!

Cannot stress prep and clean . . . without those all your labors are pointless . .

Good masking tape is important too . .

Clean the wheel with a good solvent to remove grease, oil and dust . . lint free cloth.

Mask off the areas . . .

Clean again, to remove your finger prints.

Use matching brand primers, paint and clears . .

Use light layers . .

FOLLOW manufacturer coating instructions . . . if you wait too long between coats most likely will get lifting and wrinkles . .

Take your time.

Practice . . .

like xsta said, its ALL in the prep i cant stress that enough!!! if its truly bare aluminum (no clear coat over it) then you could use a self etching primer if it is no really bare then dont use self etching. You can use sealer instead if u have access to it... saves you the sanding, some people dont sand primer from rattle cans but i like to scuff mine just to hold better due to rocks ect. hitting wheels. light coats and spend plenty of time masking trying to mask in one solid piece or a few pieces as possible so u dont get any bleeds. and a cheap can of adhesion promoter is never a bad idea! just practice on some junk panels. clean with a non oil based paint thiner, lacquer thiner, final clean, enamel reduce and if worst comes to worst dawn soap is actually a very good degreaser. Good luck buddy!

I typically use Engine Enamel for all of my work . . consistent finishes too. Seem to hold up to some of the harsher cleaners too.

Use etching primer on bare metal or it'll flake off...

Ok guys here's my results. I followed xsta to a tee. Cleaned, cleaned again, masked, cleaned, adhesion promoter, paint.

Everything turned out great! No runs, no weird spots. All even and looks very good! I'm pretty proud of myself here. Thanks to everyone who threw down some help for me. I really appreciate it!
