275/40r17 tires (or experience with these brands in general) please
Ordering 4 17x9.5" wheels for my Chevelle. Weighs 37xx lbs and is used for clear weather cruising and autox (I will have dedicated drag wheels/tires)
I am trying to decide between the following tires taking into account only: dry traction, cornering, actual width, and tread life
Federal SS 595: 240 treadwear, known for being wide, targeting towards drift crowd, cheapest of the options
Nitto 555: 300 treadwear, average width, same price as Federals, longest life expectancy at sacrifice of harder compound
Nitto NT05: 200 treadwear, narrow for their size?, $12 more per tire than above 2, made for max effort street cornering, possible short tread life?
BFG Sport Comp II: 340 treadwear, I don't know much about these but I expect they would be close to the 555 in tread life, price close to NT05
I am leaning towards the NT05 but afraid they will wear too quickly. I've seen people complain about them lasting as little as 8-10k miles...
Honestly, I would likely be happy with any compared to 15" 420+ treadwear all season junk, but I can't help but seek the best bang for my buck.
I am open to other tire options if they are $480-530 shipped for all 4 since that it what these will run me.

I have the exact same tire size, I opted for the Nitto 555s due to good grip and excellent tread life.
I'm stock minus SLP lid, 4.10s and a muffler and it grips well for a street tire. Yes, I can spin em in 1st and a little in 2nd but for a DD I can't beat 30k expected mi life.
How much power are you pushing? NT05s are grippier but last 10k max, word on the street.
Look at Toyo R888 and TQ also.

I can speak for the nitto 555 extreme. It's the only tire I've used the past 10 years for my front tires. They stop amazingly well when it's dry, but wet.....it's amazing too.
Dry handling and grip is awesome. These tires are rock solid. The set I have now are 3 1/2 years old and they still look great. So good, that I'm pulling them off my factory 17x9 rims and jotting me on my new 17 x 9.5 rims that are coming in this week. No need to buy new ones yet, not even close. But I am buying rear tires just because the new rim is 18".......but the 315/35/17 Nitto 555 Extremes that have been on the rear also for 3.5 years....look just fine too. Lots of tread left.
Great tire......

My roommate uses those too and I found a place where I can get them for $10 cheaper a set than even the Federals.
I keep reading threads on NT05 that say things like "8-10k miles" and I don't think I am ready to burn through brand new rubber on all 4 corners that fast.
Fairly certain I will just get the Nitto 555 for now, solid tires for rock bottom price...the only thing cheaper are Sumitomos or Nexens and I've heard nothing but bad about either of those.

I like my NT-05's, but I only put between 1500-2000 miles a year on the car. So tread life is not a huge concerns. The only Nitto that is listed not near its mathmatical expectation is the 315/35/17 NT-555R. Most of the others are close to spec. Also the first number is section width, not necessarily treadwidth. My NT-05's are listed at something like 10.78 inch treadwidth. Mathmatical section width is 10.82

I had the sport comp 2's on the fronts in 245/45/18 and they were great. I needed new hub bearings for the life was about 20,000 miles because the outside edge of one was getting ate up. I am going to use them again when I get my truck back together again. 275/40/18 and 245/45/18...

Got the wheels on last night. I definitely like them overall. The car needs to be lower in the back (going to try to fix that tonight) and I think they would look better with a spacer in the rear to push the wheels closer to flush instead of being sunk in so much.
Driving wise, they offer a ton more traction than the 15" junk street tires available. The car will still spin all through first if you are WOT but with throttle modulation I can make it hook decent.
The car's turn in and ability to hold in a turn is enormously better. Severely reduced the under steer I had.

I have NT05's (non-DRs) and have 10k on them with good tread left. I put my SS through the paces in the turns. One thing I do NOT do is go spinning them off at lights/stop signs/etc. Maybe that's the difference.

I drove the car hard through some backroads Saturday afternoon and I am more than pleased with the 555s. In an autox setting I might get more from a NT05 or similar but I can't see myself needing more than these provide for everything else I do with the car.

been running the standard 555s for many years. the original goodyear eagles were crap compared to them. love the handling, even in the wet.
tried on the rear a few years back Nitto 555 RII Extreme, road racing carcass with a soft drag racing thread, love that tire for its' corner handling but wore out too quickly. once I had one of them lose all pressure and didn't know it by looking at the car, that's how stiff of a sidewall they have.
my off season tires are BFG T/A Super Sports on all 4,great cold weather and snow handling.
currently have Nitto 555 315/35/17 drag radials on the standard rims on the rear. I know they shouldn't go on a standard rim and everyone's gonna 'scold' me,but 5 years now and even some trips to Florida from Ohio.
