Lots of road racers do it, IIRC its because nitrogen is a tad lighter. I may be wrong though.

The reason people put nitrogen into tires, especially race teams is due to the expansion rate due to temperature of nitrogen vs. air. Nitrogen is dried so it contains very little water which is what causes the air to expand contract with temperature.

Not worth the issue and hassles unless you are concerned about the exact tire pressure.

In racing a 1 psi change makes a big difference when handling at 100+ mph is concerned.

Check your tire pressure weekly (or monthly) and you should be fine.

Exactly. I noticed a local tire place pushing nitrogen to everyone, I can only imagine some of the reasons they come up with to try and sell it to the average Joe. I guess they have to try and justify the $6K the spent for the pump station.

when purchasing my tires i was told all the same things and it also helps out if u have chrome rims. because the moisture could eat away at the chrome after a while. i think the guy might have been bs'n me to get more of my money.

So it will eat at the chrome huh? On the inside of the rim? Where no one can see? Where rims most likely aren't chromed anyway? It is amazing what people try to sell these days...

But when aluminum oxidizes it forms a hard clear layer at the surface and the aluminum won't break down, right?

It keeps stagger exact when racing ovals, and doesn't swell as much like guy mentioned before, we use to use when racing karts but their is no need for it in a street tire.

it would be a PITA if the tire was low, then you would have to go back to the tire place to get it filled, too much trouble for the street.

For what it's worth. I would stick to good 'ol air. Besides, it's free.

Well, to maximize your 'air', make sure the compressor you are using has a good dryer system on it. That way you are introducing a lot less moisture to your tire. Try and avoid the gas station air stations as they don't have any dryers on them. To test this, spray a little air over your hand and see how many droplets of water form on your skin.

Well not sure on the oxidizing thing thats just what the guy told me,it was free nitrogen fill and mounting&balancing because when i ordered 165r15 they were suppose to be there the next day and it took a week1/2 to get them. The guy said he'd give me these free for not being after driving to get the tires and callin for about a week
