Default How much of a difference?

I currently have 275/40/17 bf goodrich kd's on my car. If I bought a pair of 17x11 inch rims for the rear and mounted the same tires(bfg kd's) but only as 315/35/17, how much of an increase in traction could I expect to see?

virtually nothing--you are still working with the same overall diameter and sidewall--if u had a larger sidewall u would notice much bigger gains but if u go taller u will be losing gearing. ive tried 275vs315 nittos and got the same results--but the 315's look muuuuuuuch better.

But isn't there more contact patch with the 315's than with the 275 thus making better traction?

That's what I figured but I've heard a few people say that traction has more to do with sidewall height and tire compound than width. But that's what I figured. A bigger contact patch should mean more rubber to handle the load, right?

sideall and tread compound make or break the day--width isnt too much assistance. it would be marginal at best.

I guess i'll pass on them for now until I got some extra money to burn. Not any time soon though. The next wheels I'm getting are probably gonna be a set of bogarts. Thanks for the help guys.
