Default Wheel almost fell off today!!!!

So I was driving along and suddenly I noticed my car was vibrating entirely too much and for too long to be the road... I pulled over and realized that two of my lug nuts were missing, and so were the STUDS! Of the remaining 5, two of them were loose and only one was still tight! I would have to consider myself VERY lucky that the wheel didn't actually come off.

I had just gotten new wheels and tires put on July 1st at Discount Tire.

Any ideas as to what happened?

I got it towed to a local shop to have the studs replaced, and am waiting for a phone call...

Uh oh... what bolt pattern were the rims? Good thing you pulled over. Only time that ever happened to me was in my GTP... the wheel bearing seized and ripped 3 studs in half.

Bolt pattern is correct for the car: 5x4.75 i think.. anyway, they are AR Rebel 18x10 all the way around. I'm just glad it didn't fly off and let my *** end drag pavement!

I would give discount a call and rip someone, they could get in huge trouble for that. They should pay for all cost and cut you a 50% off deal on your next tires for your trouble

Agreed... sounds like someone used an impact to tighten the lugs and over tightened them big time.

I had gone back after 60 miles to get them re-tourqued. The guy said that they really needed it too.

If they aren't the correct bolt pattern they lugs will start to loosen on their own, that's why you need to retorque them once a week usually if you buy wheels made for a BMW or other car. Lots of people buy the ADR's, etc that aren't made for our cars and they should be retorquing the lugs often. Did you buy the wheels from Discount or online?

Make sure they used the right lug nuts.

This is the second event where I've hear of an AR wheel and lugs coming loose . . . .

Hmmm... Just purchased and installed my 19x8.5 and 19x9.5 Ruff Racing rims on the 1st... I started getting a squeeking sound from the right front like something was rubbing, I went to take the wheel off and look for any signs of rubbing and a stud broke right off... what kind of Lug nuts where you using?

I bought them from a dealer in michigan.. best deal I could find on them when I wanted them. They were shipped in the AR boxes and had the correct bolt pattern, offset, everything. I plan on getting the torque checked regularly for a little while just to see if it will happen again.

I was using whateve discount put on them. I didn't really specify.. all I cared about was that they worked and they were chrome.

Funny you mentioned squeaking sound... I just started hearing one today from my rear.... very strange, but no vibration... I think I will get it checked out tomorrow.

There are many types of lug nuts, if they put on the wrong kind they can easily work themselves loose.
