Default 15x10 Weld Draglites on '98 Trans am

Does anyone know if 15x10 (5.5 Backspacing) Weld Draglites would work on my '98 Trans Am with BFH mod and caliper grinding? If neccesary, can they be spaced

Right now I currently have 28x11.5 MT ET Streats mounted to 16x8 wheels sitting on the rear. I've made some more room with the hammer and fender trimming. I ground the calipers before and fitted some 15" wheels, but the tires stuck out way too far and I only had 26" tires on them then, so I know sticking way out won't work with tall tires.

For street, I have 275/50 R-17 Nittos (27.88" tall, 11.10" Wide) mounted on 17x9 wheels.

They'll stick out about an inch. I had 6.5" bs on my 10" Prostars and they were dead even with the quarter panel.

I'm trying to read around these threads. Is the consensus that I should be looking for a 7.5" backspace if I get 15x10" Weld Draglites?

7.5 is the universal backspacing, but T/As can get away with 6.5 due to the wider 1/4 panels.

Thanks for the knowledge. You guys have made me more comfortable with my decision-making.

Anyone know how wide a tire I might be able to put on these rims if I want them about 28" tall?

Thanks again!

Think I could fit something like this:

Model ...... Size ....... Size Eqivalent . Weight . Rim . Sidewall . Tread . Dia
3757R . P325/50R15 . 28 X 13.50R15 .. 36 lbs . 10" ..... 13" ..... 11" ... 28"

And based on what you said about the 6.5" backspace, M/T carries these:

__ Part# ____ Size ____ Wgt_ Bolt Pattern__________ Back Spacing
65105076 __ 15X10 ___ 12.5 _ 5 X 4.5 / 5 X 4.75 B.C. _ 6 1/2

Scratch that ... it's discontinued ...

The 325s can fit on a 7.5" bs with some BFH'ing and possible rolling the fender lip. If you move the tire another inch out towards the fender you'll end up with clearance issues. I haven't ever seen a 325 on a 6.5" bs wheel. It MIGHT be able to fit, but I'm not one to take big risks.

Thanks again.

Any idea what backspacing I should have for the fronts if I run 15 X 7" wheels up there (with about a P195 to P225 tire)? And tell me if I'm mucking up here. I want a smaller look, but don't want that Iron block to weight down too heavily on the front tires. I don't want skinnies ... just a narrower look, a lighter wheel and for it stay streetable with handling.

Does 5.5" backspace for the front sound right? (Trying to intepret the post about offsets.)

For the fronts you're limited to a 15x3.5 with 1.75" bs. on the Welds unless you go to Bogarts or Centerlines, then you can run a 15x4. If you don't want skinnies you'll pretty much have to have some stock wheels narrowed by Weldcraft I think, and it's about $200 a rim I think.

The LS1 calipers are what limit you on the front. If you've got an iron block, you'll want to get Mickey T 8-ply front runners instead of the cheap 165R15 metric tires. I had Kumho 165s and had to max the pressure out to keep them from having a bulge (looking like they were low due to the weight of the car b/c they're made for Volkswagen beetles).

I'm sorry ... I'm probably not being specific.

Would a 5.5" backspace work for a 15x7" wheel? If not, for the 15x7" wheel, what backspace should I use?

I don't want anything narrower than a 15x7" wheel; I just need to specify the backspace.

Thanks!

I'm in Chapel Hill and I could show you what the fronts look like if you want. I'm currently running 15x3.5 with 1.75" bs up front and 15x8 with 5.5" bs in the rear. I've got the kuhmo's up front and he's right about the bulge. I'm currently running 40 psi up front and they still look like they are low.

15x7 on the front? I haven't seen any wider than 15x4 that will clear the calipers.

Thanks for the advice from you guys about the front wheels.

If I got the stiffer tire, does the car handle ok with the 3.5" wheel with 1.75" backspacing?
